Everyone's trees are vastly improving! Imagine how the trees will look in 10+ years..awesome. To me, that's what bonsai is about..the further view down the road. This is a ficus I sold for a charity cause. I asked the buyer to contact me, if she planned selling the tree. She did (changing...

Wow, some awesome trees guys! Have not been around for a while, nice to see the thread going on! This is a ficus I've been working on. Nothing special, except, it's a "Slanted Banyon" style/form/shape: Best, Dorothy

    New Bonsai Rule

Stacie, sometimes folks ask basic questions during a demo just to keep the conversation going and/or to see what your thoughts are on the basics. It does not necessarily mean they have no clue. I have experienced that quite often in the past. Congrats on your demos! Best, Dorothy

    The Tree Thread

It really depends on the tree. With lots of fine structure I leave a pair of leaves on every branch-let. If the tree needs growth, same thing. If I plan to show it, I leave some leaves on and remove them as soon as the new buds come out. If I have to repot to revive a tree, more leafs stay. If I...

This year I use lava rock/pumice/calcinated clay. All equal parts and size (!). I feed lots of fertilizer and thus water a lot- or vice versa. You may have to adjust to your needs and habits. Best, Dorothy

Cedar elm Great work, Vance. The Shimpaku juniper does not do very well around here. Too much summer heat (through the nights), no winters. The Parsoni juniper ranges from USDA zones 4 through 11, by the way. Best, Dorothy Cedar elm - little - defoliated today:

Vance, the Parsoni juniper does very well under the South Florida conditions. We have hot summers, days and nights, and no real winter break. I can get away with shorter periods between stylings and repotting sessions. On the downside, it takes longer to train the foliage pads, but then they...
