    Crabapple renovation

Thanks for the info. I've been more and more interested in deadwood features lately but I'm not to sure my crab would look quite right with it yet, I think I need to stare at it more. Im looking forward to spring updates.

    Crabapple renovation

Judy you have a wonderful crab apple there. I'm wondering how the ramification continued to develop for you over this past summer. I would love to see a progress picture if you have one. I'm hoping you or stan might be able to answer a question I have. I'm wondering how long pruning scars...

    Sunny Escambron

As an aspiring bonsai artist without any showable trees I don't speak out much here- I just lurk for the most part, but for jeebus sake, let the trees speak for themselves people! I love visitng Bnut and reading about and moreso admiring great trees.

    Twin Trunk Procumbens Nana

Sorry to hear about the tree, that is a drastic weather change. If the tree itself split from freezing, did the pot manage to survive? I really fancy that pot.

    Yamadori Rocky Mountain Juniper

What a fantastic tree. Quite large! Thank you for documenting and sharing the progression of this tree. I just read this whole thread in one sitting and there is undoubtedly a lot of great information here. You have done a wonderful job developing this material. I am a bonsai begginer and like...

    Scoops

I was working in my shop yesterday and after a quick glance at these old cartridges on my shelf, I thought they might make some decent small soil scoops. I forget where I got them but they have a nice heft at the bottom that keeps them standing upright. Nothing fancy but it was a fun 15 minute...

    Show Off Your Mulberry Bonsai

Bump. Nobody has any mulberry trees? When I lived in midtown Detroit on my street were good sized mulberries that at the same time would usually drop the majority of their berries and turn the streets purple with the juice. All of them were too big to be diggable. My buddy did pick...

    Spider Mites!!!

I've never had an issue with spider mites but neem oil in a spray bottle works great for me when dealing with scale bugs on my ficus. My benjamina gets them more often then the other.

    My 'Ben Oki' azalea

This tree is fantastic and thanks for sharing the developement. Brian, I'm wondering if this azalea needs a winter dormancy? I think I read that this is a satsuki earlier in the thread... I'm not familiar with azaleas or the different varieties but I have been entertaining the idea of growing...

Five favorite trees of all time.

Great thread, lots of wonderful trees to gawk at. I'm a sucker for flowering specimens which will likely show through in my choices.. 1- My favorite tree of all time, a very famous Chojubai. Sprawling, lush, fertile, and yet it has such age. This tree takes me away to a different setting...

    Annealing Copper Wire

I believe 'soft drawn' refers to the hardness of the wire as you will recieve it. When making wire they start with a larger diameter then they need and it usually gets drawn (pulled) through a series of circular dies to reduce its diameter (quite forcefully). This process makes the resulting...

    Annealing Copper Wire

I agree with ed. I coil it up tightly so all the individual wires heat up nice and evenly as "one" piece would. Im a metalworker so i have all sorts of torches, I usually will just use my small propane torch and heat until dull red and quench in water. If after you quench and the copper is...

    Sumo Japanese Quince Material

I'm unfamiliar with Scarlett Q. I notice Nick your located in LA and im just wondering if the scarlett variety only needs a milder winter dormancy? I understand many quinces are very hardy so I'm wondering how far south they will actually grow. I'm unfamiliar with LA's climate as well which...

Design: The Divine Proportion and natural sequences

For those of you interested in this subject perhaps the books "Geometry in Nature" or "the Geometry of Flowers" may be a good read for you. Although I don't believe they talk about bonsai I do believe one touches on the growth of trees. My girlfriend has them both, very interesting.

    Japanese Quince styling

Check out the attached photos. The first 2 pictures are of the biggest one and in the second is a smaller one (which there are a few of on the other smaller branches). Hasn't seemed to be detrimental to the tree. These were not on the tree in spring and have happened slowly throughout the...

    Japanese Quince styling

I'm not sure what to make of them myself. All my trees woke up right on cue after our last winter here which was about -35 with windchill some days. None of my trees had any die back and started growing and flowering without a hitch. The quince was repotted in addition to all this right before...

    Japanese Quince styling

I agree Dick, great thread. I want to try organic ferts on my trees and see how they respond but the city squirrels around here aren't messing around. Ive been finding them digging through my pots more frequently lately. I think organic ferts might make it even worse. Its starting to get...

    Japanese Quince styling

Leo just out of curiosity I'm wondering how large your plastic pots are for the cuttings your growing out? I've seen pictures of beautiful contorted varieties and I I'm definitely interested in getting one at some point. I think a white contorted would really be a stand out tree. Don't forget...

    Japanese Quince styling

Leo I appreciate your input. I agree, this tree was an 'investment' for me. From what I understand this tree is as old as I am so I'm definitely not trying to make hastey decisions with this one. It will be interesting to see the size of the blooms compared to my others. I've noticed the iwai...

    Japanese Quince styling

Thanks for the virtual Brian I get what your saying now. Dick that's good to know. I've been switching to dyna bloom in about mid september for the past two years for my single trunk quince and it seem to be helping the show come spring. I'm wondering what kind of fert you use? Ill continue...

    Japanese Quince styling

Thanks for all the input everyone. Fredtruck, I've snooped your older quince threads and you have some beautiful trees sir. I'll have to do some research into that colin lewis book. Does anyone have any other sources of reading for j quinces? This is my third quince and have so far had good...

    Japanese Quince styling

Thank you for the insight judy. Looking at it now, the roots do seem clumsy. I will plan on positioning the tree lower into its bonsai pot next spring. When you say cut the trunks back to their first branches- say for example the far right trunk, I would be cutting it back down to that littlest...

    Japanese Quince styling

I mostly lurk around here on B nut but I wanted to share a recent gem I've acquire which I am very excited about. The tree is a triple trunked Iwai Nishiki Japanese quince I received from Brent at evergreen. Im a little perplexed as how to approach the 3 main trunks. The first picture is...

    a winter wall

I too know very little about the formal aspects of display when it comes to showing bonsai. Being a maker of objects I will tell you the wood work looks good and sound to me and I like the sharp edges in contrast to the stone. I'm assuming the wooden base will get some sort of stain or...

    Eye Candy!

Those are indeed a work art. Not sure if those are stainless steel or some sort of high carbon, mild steel, steel, etc.. but if they are anything other than stainless I would keep those shears well oiled! If the engraving starts to rust it will be a nightmare to try and get those details back...
