Killer find in the dried out swamp

Winter is not a problem. I have two in the ground they have had -20 / -25C. They bud out very late here, this year bud swell was May 1st bud break May 15, last frost snow warning has always been and still is May 24th. A tent like tarp will keep the frost off. I'd say go for it!

Question for those that reuse substrate...

Heat to 350 in oven until bone dry, fill a bucket with water and let the hose run at the bottom. As it over flows add dry dirty old substrate slowly and the dry organics sit on top and are washed over the side as it overflows. Have a small sieve to skim the top occasionally, it's fast and does...

Paperbark Birch progression; working around the pitfalls

Thank you, I will have some time tomorrow and later in the week, I will definitely look into this! Yes I think this was what I was looking for, by compartmentalize, you're saying it would break the local connections between roots & limbs, make one less dependent on the other? Thanks for...

Paperbark Birch progression; working around the pitfalls

I had bad experience with a Horse Chestnut a few years back, a gift from my Father In-law. I clipped an ugly root coming out of the trunk 2" above soil level, looked great without that root, this killed the branch it was feeding and the strip of trunk between the two, also the entire core of...

Paperbark Birch progression; working around the pitfalls

This shows the base of one of them, germinated in a peat pod, you can still see the remnants of the outer net. You can see that with the annual root pruning the root ball is flat and it is developing a few larger radial roots. There is a mass of very fine feeder roots mixed in with the...

Paperbark Birch progression; working around the pitfalls

As for this year, I have transplanted them yet again to the lawn, sounds dumb but they are close to the patio so I can keep an eye on them. First up, buds were here @ transplant, maybe a bit late. Roots and a trunk reference of only one, this is it's 4th summer. Oh yeah, Leafs are on top...

Paperbark Birch progression; working around the pitfalls

I like birch a lot (as does everyone) but I don't see many as Bonsai, in fact I have only seen one, that was here, styled as an informal upright but nothing like a birch. Consequently I see no definitive info on Birch other than what makes them bad Bonsai. I have heard the negative traits...

    Repotting bald cypress - timing?

Yes, they must be moved and they need to go where they can sit for some time to gain taper. Thanks for your input.

    Repotting bald cypress - timing?

Looks like you're done here so... can I hi-jack your thread for a moment? Look @ my BC buds, could someone tell me if this is ready for a transplant today or is it too far along? Thanks.

Juniperus Virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) #2

I have just heard back from treehelp.com re. where's Fungi Fighter? Off the market, they cannot source the ingredients, temporary? possibly. In any case you have far more choice in the states than here. Systemic is a must because you are not there when infection occurs.

Juniperus Virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) #2

Nice tree, they're strong and they grow like weeds. I use "Monterey Fungi Fighter" the active ingredient is "propiconazole". I cannot find it available online today meaning it's been banned, here anyway. It's locally systemic (I don't even know if that's a thing) by that I mean it absorbs...

Two questions (Photo Lighting and 1st Juniper)

If all you have is an iPhone don't use flash. You can also try shooting into the light, (light behind tree) then try it both with and without flash.

Do we underestimate trees' intelligence sometimes? Overwintering and breaking-buds season

I like this, it avoids a comparison to ourselves. I was amazed to find how simple and obvious it was that a plant can regulate it's top to bottom growth through the production of two hormones. This leads me to ask (off topic I'm afraid) is there any evidence to suggest that any of the...

Do we underestimate trees' intelligence sometimes? Overwintering and breaking-buds season

Although I would never apply the word intelligent to trees, your definition is a pretty strong case for trees being intelligent! "...trying to figure out how to get from messing around to taking this thing seriously." I'll offer you my sons take on things. While in University he said to me "Dad...

    Freeze Damage

You have a lot of green underneath the dead stuff. I had similar damage the year before this with a JBP, we had 2 spells of thaw-rain-freeze. One of the times the thaw & rain had not cleared the snow before the freeze, it seemed pretty brutal, I figured it was the ice. The fact that you have...

Where to find heavy gauge copper?

That is exactly what I was thinking, there's a supply chain in scrap. They put bungalows in dump trucks in less than a day around here, each one is grounded, that's a good start, thanks.

Where to find heavy gauge copper?

I can't find it here but if all else fails I know where to get it. This is what I was looking for, I know where to start looking. Thanks again. I did not know that! Always interesting. I got my wire from Jeremiah. I got the starter bundle, thanks to Adair for the suggestion, # 8 gauge...

Where to find heavy gauge copper?

Okay, might need three or four, one did nothing really. Heads up, understood thanks, 8 while softer it's not really soft, I would like to see what 6 does though, I haven't actually seen 6 or 4 yet so I won't know until I try them.

Where to find heavy gauge copper?

I do want to do it myself and not in my experience, as stated above it is a composite of strands, eg. 3/7 is seven strands twisted together to the gauge of 3. The examples you gave at Lowes are not available at Loews in Canada, ours is stranded. BUT the border will open soon and it's 128 km...

Where to find heavy gauge copper?

I annealed some # 8 copper wire in a barbeque on charcoal briquettes from instructions found here. I've been looking around but I can't find anything thicker. Correct me if I'm wrong but it must be solid # 6, 4 or 2 not stranded to make # 6 etc. It also must be sold by the foot as I don't...
