    Bonsai soil mix

Some updates based on what I've been seeing in my operation - 1. The coco coir at 15% breaks down after 2-3 years and the soil become less capable of nutrient retention. This is a problem if you were growing in the same pot long-term, but not if you are stepping up containers or changing it...

And the 6 Year JBP from Seed Winners are....

Contrats to @Ryceman3 ! Nice work. I didn't even attempt an informal upright, but also never planned to use ground growing.

    Help With Stunted Pine Seedlings

Purple coloring is often cold adaptation in young pines. I see it in 1YP JBP all the time. They don't do that when they're older though. As for the shriveling needles - obviously they're not healthy - but the needles themselves do not appear to have any blight on them. They are likely shriveling...

    Help With Stunted Pine Seedlings

My recent video Scots pines was of three-year olds. The largest black pines I've gotten in 1 year were greenhouse grown the entire time - and about 6" tall, with about a pencil size trunk. But the majority of them are more like 2-3" and a trunk half that size. As for Scots pines - as I...

    Bonsaify Juniper eCourse Suggestions?

Joe - timing wise - I'm guessing Jan-February it will be done. Of course in the last month I've worked on 500 junipers and filmed 0 segments of the course. So maybe I'm being optimistic? I'm also thinking that the course might focus more on the trunk and deadwood creation rather than on...

    Bonsaify Juniper eCourse Suggestions?

Working on this still. I took a little field trip that I decided to share part of on YouTube. Enjoy. I'll be using this as part of the instructional sessions but with added discussions.

Summer Repotting of Chojubai and Princess Persimmon

I hope I didn't hijack this nice thread on Chojubai and PP with the soil stuff....lol. I'll be doing a test repot of a couple persimmon later this week. The buds are already forming along the branches so I'm hoping that means it'll be fine.🤞

Summer Repotting of Chojubai and Princess Persimmon

Since you're a technical guy - you should explore that a bit. Here are a couple relevant bits from "Soilless Culture: Theory and Practice" 2e by Raviv, Lieth and Bar-Tal: So my takeaway is that the differences are in the residual minerals that will leach and their ability to hold nutrients...

Summer Repotting of Chojubai and Princess Persimmon

For reference - Jonas tested 100% washed lava and got good growth. I've used 80:20 perlite/coco but I don't think it's ideal. The older white chojubai I have has been in APL for a long time.

    Ficus benjimina cultivar identification

Lol. I didn't know there were so many cultivars. Well, from that link it looks most like "Wianda" but @Lorax7 has a good point. But after watching Nigel's video here I think it actually might be "Too Little":

    Ficus benjimina cultivar identification

Hi All, I picked up these ficus benjimina from Lone Pine nursery a while ago. They had two different types, of which this was the one with smaller leaves. But, they were all labeled the same. I've since been propagating them but wanted to figure out if it's a named cultivar. So what's your...

    Bonsaify Juniper eCourse Suggestions?

I previously only did Kishu cuttings in October/Nov but Ed Clark told me to try it in June. He said keep them as hot and wet as you can until they root. As for the heat mat - yeah 24/7 at about 75F - maybe hotter even will really drive root growth. In your location I'd try June, but if you have...

    Bonsaify Juniper eCourse Suggestions?

A good set of queries. I'll think about this. For the cuttings - did you use bottom heat? In a cold environment I think that would be very important.

    Bonsaify Juniper eCourse Suggestions?

It's interesting that I always hear about Mirai Live but not much about BonsaiU or Bonsai Empire. I approach my eCourses from the perspective that none of these guys know much about growing trees from scratch. It's a shame because so many people have gone to Japan to study bonsai, but nobody has...

    Bonsaify Juniper eCourse Suggestions?

Hey everyone, I want to get questions and feedback from folks during the main production process of my juniper eCourse. At the moment I've made only 4 videos out of something like 25-30 needed. The course will start with propagation, then go through roughly 10-15 years of development including...

Summer Repotting of Chojubai and Princess Persimmon

I'm not sure I've ever seen a graph in the literature that includes the term "The Valley of Suck".

Dunno - I think we all could - but I'm liking my results so far. Just have to get it into a bonsai pot.
