    Why should we care?

I think it would be a fair discussion either way. It is an important distinction, though. I also think it's a fair assumption that most of us as members of the bonsai community do actually care about the health of that community. It's cavalier to say "I don't care about anyone but what happens...

    Why should we care?

Is the question "Should we care?" or "Why should we care?" Very different questions requiring very different thought processes to answer. It seems we are discussing the first when the OP asked the second.

    Hedgeadori identification help

Looks like a privet and if they have a good base, they make nice bonsai. Others may have more info about specific variety, etc.

    Masakuni vs the rest

First, Apple sure does tell you all of that info. They sell multiple models with different specs, etc. Second, it's not secrets folks want. We want the length of the cutting edge... Is it possible that because folks have experienced them to be wonderful tools that they are defending them against...

    What did you do today

You guys and your california weather. My trees will be in hiding for another 6 weeks I bet... and you're already out collecting! I need to take a road trip lol

Bonsai Nut Spring Box Store Challenge

Vance, the last challenge was almost all junipers if I remember correctly. This rule distinction is for variety's sake. And, after all, this is just for fun. It's not Noelanders...

Bonsai Nut Spring Box Store Challenge

I thought he said that the rule would be non coniferous evergreens. That would put the yew outside of the rules, as it is coniferous, right? Or did I miss something? I think I missed something.

Bonsai Nut Spring Box Store Challenge

Mine looks iffy. I'll be surprised if it's alive come April. I think I got a little too aggressive in the pruning.

    The Yamadori Thread

Collected this Alder from a creek bed last April. Will be chopping it way back this spring.

    First Ume

I agree with Judy. Try changing the planting angle some and rotate it. While nebari is very important, it is also vital that the tree not be leaning away from the viewer. You want the tree to look like it's leaning in to give you a hug, not pulling away because your breath stinks...

    Masakuni vs the rest

I get your point, Vin. However, I didn't get the impression that the OP wanted to know trade secrets or any details that shouldn't be a part of the advertisement of the goods. He mentions things like the length of the cutting blade, for example. Wanting to know that is kind of essential when...

    Masakuni vs the rest

I have no information on masakuni tools at all. Mostly because I couldn't find much besides people saying they are good. I respect that, but some product details help. Kaneshin has a very informative site, as you've said, and that's what persuaded me to order from them. I don't know how good...

    Pronunciation

Nope. Just a question. I assumed they'd refer to the conventions of baseball in japanese and not English, but wasn't sure. I figure if they don't worry about English terms for baseball, then we shouldn't care too much about Japanese terms for bonsai, though.

    Pronunciation

Serious question: When the japanese discuss baseball, do they talk about balls and strikes or do they use japanese words for these things?

And that is exactly the point of the video. Collect the boxwood and keep it alive. Not seeing why the aggressive tone to this conversation from you.

Oh Boy! The Yamadori Saga Continues...

I'm grateful that those with experience are willing to share it as well. So many people seem to spit in their faces when the advice doesn't mesh with what they want to do.

Oh Boy! The Yamadori Saga Continues...

One knows because they've collected, as Walter recommended, a tree with little value from a local location and have been able to keep it alive. Once that is possible, you know you have the basic skills to keep yamadori alive. Then consider collecting trees of value. I do understand that...

    XXL Trident

Thanks for the additional photos. I'd still like to see one where the horizontal-ish branch is nearly pointing at the camera, just to the left of center, so you can really see into the area you opened up by removing that hunk. There doesn't look like a bad angle on this thing. Nice pick up!

    XXL Trident

Try turning it so that you can see directly in between those two front branches. It will expose the scar you just made, but I think you'll be able to see the two right trunks better. let's have a look.

    XXL Trident

Judy, could you rotate maybe 20 degrees counter clockwise from the angle of pic two above and let us have a look?

    XXL Trident

I like the decision to remove that section. It opens it up and really shows off the strength of the trunk even more, I think. Thanks for the update.

    What's in your toolchest?

Brian, can you clarify this statement for me? Specifically, do you use Gremel wire because it's cheaper or because it's good? You say you use Gremel wire and that you use what's cheap. Wasn't sure if you were talking about copper vs. aluminum or I dunno... I'm having a cookie hangover today and...

    What's in your toolchest?

I don't know about the strength of the wire... I think that the big differences amongst the copper wires is how soft it is before use and work hardening. The softer it is at first, the easier it is to apply. Some people are much better at annealing the copper wire for use. I'm quite new and...
