The trick is bottom heat and like I said, I keep my cuttings in the greenhouse all year until they are rooted. I take my clippings now and they usually root by July-Aug.

I have had success growing from clippings with Shin Deshojo, Arakawa and Shishigashira. I do have a green house where I keep them even during the summer.

Was it 40f during day or night? If it was during the day then it most likely went below freezing at night and if that was the case it may have suffered from frost damage.
