    No New Growth This Season

I repot every 2 years and I always cut back hard. I've had these trees for a very long time and I always treat them the same during repoting.

    No New Growth This Season

Temps don't drop below 32f. 7 years ago I lost 3 nice trees to what I think was do to their roots freezing for too long and ever since I protect the tress more. My greenhouse is only 4 years old and this is the first time this happens.

    No New Growth This Season

Unfortunately I just got home and because of the beauty of daylight savings time it was already dark. I'm posting the pictures I took with my phone with flash, but I these are useless. I think your #1 reason might be the most interesting option. I would agree with you with the hornbeam, trident...

    No New Growth This Season

The lowest temps in the greenhouse is 32f. They all drop their leaves so they definitely go dormant. They are very healthy looking, just not growing. All of these trees are 25 and over in years. On the coldest day in winter (I'm in NJ) if there's sun outside, temps in the greenhouse can reach...

    No New Growth This Season

What causes trees to stop growing? I ask because I have 4 trees (Chinese elm, trident maple, Korean Hornbeam and Pyracantha) that didn't grow 1' this season. All above trees were repotted this past spring, they were all fed every 2 weeks. These are all older trees, above 25 years old. Their...

    Failed airlayer on Shishigashira

Hello everyone. Can anyone here tell me a possible reason why an airlayer can fail and also, what would cause the airlayer part to turn brown? I also included pictures of another airlayer on same tree that remains green. Both airlayers were started in the middle of May of this year. Thanks for...

    32 year old Acer Rubrum

Ho How successful were you in reducing the leaf size? I know these trees have very large leaves as I have one in front of my property. Very nice work.

    Green Island Ficus

Hello everyone. This tree was a beauty at one point. (Before and after pictures attached). Right after summer ended, it to lose all of its leaves and I thought it was dead. I scratched the upper trunk to confirm that it was dead and I thought it was. I tossed it underneath one of my benches and...

    Acer palmatum var. beni chidori

I would fly to England in the winter and buy a very small one from Peter Chan and bring it in my luggage bare root. Customs would never suspect. But that's just me.

    Crabapple Thread Graft

Hello everyone. I have a 50+ year old crabapple that I did a thread graft 2 years ago. Last spring 2021 I removed the mother plant and the graft seemed fine. This spring however the leaves on the graft seem smaller than the rest of the tree. I would like to defoliate the entire tree and only...

    Shohin Ume question.

The branch is solid, I also checked for insects underneath the leaves but didn't find anything.

    Shohin Ume question.

I have this Ume and 1 of the branches seems to be having a problem. The leaves are drooping on this one branch and falling off green. I recently removed the moss covered soil so I suspect that it wasn't getting enough water, but now it should be getting adequate amounts of water. I was hoping...

    Maple cuttings

The trick is bottom heat and like I said, I keep my cuttings in the greenhouse all year until they are rooted. I take my clippings now and they usually root by July-Aug.

    Maple cuttings

I have had success growing from clippings with Shin Deshojo, Arakawa and Shishigashira. I do have a green house where I keep them even during the summer.

    Chojubai question.

Hello everyone. How do you guys feel about repotting Chojubai in the summer? I ask because I just got one that seems pot bound. Or should I just slip pot it into a bigger pot? Thanks Steve

Chinese elm woke up, started growing like crazy, then dropped a bunch of its new leaves a few weeks later.

Was it 40f during day or night? If it was during the day then it most likely went below freezing at night and if that was the case it may have suffered from frost damage.

    Acer Shirasawanum Aureum

Hello everyone. I have a question regarding Shirasawanum Aureum. I bought this tree specifically for bonsai and wanted to know if it grows back on old wood. As you can see I cut it back hard about 1 month ago expecting to get new growth from the trunk, however nothing has happened. Any help will...

    Mid summer trunk Chop?

Hello everyone. I have this real nice Cork Bark elm that I really like. The only thing that's an eye sore to me is a slight reverse taper on the lower part of the trunk. Would like to cut on red line. What do you guys think about mid summer trunk chopping? Thanks, Steve

What's wrong with my Crape Myrtle

Hello. I used a systemic granule insecticide. Someone told me that this was caused by overwatering. If you notice these blisters have water in them.

What's wrong with my Crape Myrtle

Hello everyone. My crape Myrtle leaves are folding downwards and they have these blisters. I checked for insects but couldn't find any. It did have aphids a couple of weeks ago and I since then treated it was a systemic insecticide. There's new growth but the leaves on it look horrible as you...
