Pacific Bonsai Expo, Oakland CA, November 12-13, 2022

I got one of Nao’s 14” ovals, a few smaller pots from Vicki and a couple of jitas from Austin. Wrapped them all in paper and was able to fit them in two stacks in my 22” roll on bag. Loved your pots, by the way - next time.🙂

Pacific Bonsai Expo, Oakland CA, November 12-13, 2022

Seeing yours and others’ photos of the trees late in the day, I regret that I was never at the venue at that time to view the trees - really a ‘golden hour’ effect.

Some trees from the Pacific Bonsai Expo

Yeah, I was just joking about my photo of the long-ass line to get in😁

Shout out for Vicki Chamberlain, American potter

She participated in a ceramics discussion with three other ceramicists today at PBE and really did not sound like she was going to stop making bonsai pots.

The Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt

Some historically significant trees here, like the Daimyo Oak, gifted by Japan to the US envoy to China during the Lincoln administration, and the Mas Imazumi Black Pine.

Some trees from the Pacific Bonsai Expo

Guess not. The window for getting a photo of any given tree was a little narrow.

Some trees from the Pacific Bonsai Expo

😆I know. There were a couple having a loooong conversation having nothing to do with bonsai, right in front of the Blue Atlas Cedar.

Shout out for Vicki Chamberlain, American potter

In chatting with her about visiting her studio and hearing others chatting with her, I did not get that vibe, but, who knows.

I was thinking the trunk on the left.

I think for a believable image of ancient, you could eventually jin one of the remaining branches (I’d say the left). Here’s a Sierra Juniper for inspiration:

What are you doing to exclude debris from the system? Will you ever need to get silt pumped out of the cistern?

Rocky Mountain Douglas Fir progression (Pseudotsuga menziesii, var. glauca)

I collected this Doug Fir in early May, 2019 Did a structural setting at the end of May, beginning of June, 2020: It continued to respond well, so I got it into a bonsai container in late June, 2021: This spring, it was loaded with fat, healthy buds, so I did the first full styling last week:

You like to experiment. I say clear acrylic pot, no substrate, bare root with only hydroponic solution!😉

Pinus densiflora (Japanese Red Pine) from Telperion Farms - progression

Yesterday, I did shoot selection and needle plucking, and I removed a couple of branches which would lead to structural flaws. I also re-positioned some branches, as well as the apex.

    Winter Hazel

Thanks to an unplanned stay in NYC last weekend, due to a missed airline connection, I was able to walk the High Line and found the Winter Hazels quite charming (click on the thumbnails for better detail).
