Rocky Mountain Douglas Fir progression (Pseudotsuga menziesii, var. glauca)

I collected this Doug Fir in early May, 2019 Did a structural setting at the end of May, beginning of June, 2020: It continued to respond well, so I got it into a bonsai container in late June, 2021: This spring, it was loaded with fat, healthy buds, so I did the first full styling last week:

    A. palmatum dissectum air layer

I’ve read once, or twice on B-nut that dissecta are very difficult to air layer, but my landscape maple is throwing an apex outside of the desired silhouette, so I’m giving it a shot. I’m letting the girdle dry out for a couple of days and I’m trying to decide whether to go back and angle the...

Pinus densiflora (Japanese Red Pine) from Telperion Farms - progression

I visited Telperion in November 2019 to look for a JRP and this is what I brought home (well, to Mirai first). I did its first styling this past weekend. I repotted it January 2020: When classes went virtual last year, Ryan decandled it for me in June. Since in-person classes were cancelled...

Tea House posts no longer appear in ‘New Posts’

I preferred it when Tea House posts appeared on the Latest posts/New posts pages. @Bonsai Nut , I know you thought that only started happening after the recent site update, but I had always seen Tea House posts on those pages. I’d rather not have to navigate to the Tea House forum to see new posts.

Page down arrow missing since update

When I scroll through a thread on my iPad, I used to see two arrows in the lower right corner, one for ‘page up’ and one for ‘page down.’ The page down arrow is missing after the recent update. Can it be restored, @Bonsai Nut? Actually, I notice the ‘Preview’ button is missing, as well.

Changing image size on iPhone when uploading causes image to be rotated 90 degrees

@Bonsai Nut, my iPhone gives me the option to select smaller image sizes when choosing photos from my phone for upload to B-nut, but when uploaded, the image is always rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise. Is there a way to fix that?

    Artemisia tridentata (Sagebrush)

I got permission to collect Sagebrush at a construction site in Taos, NM the other day. The land is covered with them there. If it does well, I'll go back for some larger specimens. We're in our summer monsoon, so we're starting to get some good moisture and moderate temperatures.

Suddenly almost impossible to post with photos, then impossible to edit!

For the past two days, I haven't been able to post with photos attached. File size didn't matter. When I reduced them on my iPhone, it still wouldn't post. It isn't a problem uploading, anyway. They upload quickly, then when I attach them and try to post, I get an 'Oops, we ran into some...

Bonsai Gardens of Japan, or... How I Spent My Summer Vacation

It wasn't a bonsai themed trip, but it was certainly at the top of my list of things to do. I made the obligatory pilgrimage to Omiya, but I had the most interest in seeing the gardens of Kimura, Kobayashi and Suzuki. Luckily, my travels took me to Nagano Prefecture, where Suzuki is located...

    Insect eggs on Subalpine Fir

I was performing shoot selection on my Abies lasiocarpa when I found these eggs on a single needle. What do you think, @Arcto, do you recognize them? From what I read about spruce adelgids, they only lay one egg per needle, but I didn’t find that kind of information about fir adelgids.

    Late summer collecting trip

I went collecting up in the mountains last weekend in a new spot for me. I returned with four nice trees, one of them mame sized. I had intended to get enough aspens for a forest planting, but they proved to have not many surface roots - not too surprising, since they propagate themselves...

Recommendations for a bonsai tour operator in Japan.

Do you have someone you can recommend? I’ve sent an inquiry to Bonsai Network Japan (j-bonsai.com). I’ve purchased from their web store before and they have a page detailing their tour service. It’s an all day affair where they pick you up at your hotel, visit the Omiya gardens, including Kimura...

It’s an El Niño kind of year.

A month away from summer solstice and it’s snowing here. WTF?! You’d think I was in Mio, MI, @M. Frary, or Kootenays, BC, @wireme. How’s the weather up north?

    Engelmann Spruce (Picea engelmannii) progression

I collected this spruce in the Jemez mountains of New Mexico at the end of May 2017. I styled it this week. It has done very well and last year put out cones. I left some of them on because they were so beautiful: It is 41-3/4" (106 cm) to the top of the jin.

    Subalpine Fir (Abies lasiocarpa) progression

I collected this Subalpine Fir two years ago in New Mexico. It has thrived in its grow box and the time came to do the first styling / structural setting. At first, I thought this would be the front, because of the features: However, after evaluating it for best combination of base, trunk line...

    Progression button and search function.

I think it would be useful when creating a thread to have a button under the thread title box that says something like ‘This is a progression thread’ to flag the thread. Then, in the ‘Find’ drop down menu on a member’s profile page, another option could be added that says ‘Find all progression...

Re-sized and added a level to my soil sifter

The frames were larger than they needed to be, so I cut them down. I added a 1/8” screen - I was keeping the 1/16” particles in my mix because of the climate here, but I may leave it out for some of my trees. By the way, if you order a new window for your house, make a table out of the shipping...
