    Free seedlings!

Yeah don't ask, don't tell.. Well I told, but no one stopped me and I wasn't there for hours collecting, so the way I see it.. No harm, no foul. The place will be weeded soon and all those will end up in the compost bin. Anyways, now I got some forest material for the future!

My girlfriend and I went for a little walk through the horticultural garden here at Virginia Tech and I found all sorts of trident and jap. Maple seedlings. I can't believe I payed $$ for those things a few months ago. Now I know!

    My first JBP

I got the maple package from Matt O's website (5 tridents + 5 JM's) I am trying the nebari process that I found out about on Gary Wood's blog. I planted mine in a Turface, peat, grit mixture that seems to work well on all my other deciduous trees. Goodluck!

    My first JBP

Yeah I definitely bought three JWP's from the plant1onme guy as well... These were photos after I potted and wired them up. I don't have pics right now of them, but they don't look good at all. All the needles on them are greyish and have a smut of some sort on them. I sprayed all of my...

Where to cut my 5 needle??

This tree is about 8 years old. It's been in this pot for 6 years. It is root bound. I'm going to wire and basic shape it now and when spring time rolls around find a nice pot for it and grow it shohin style. I know the basics about white pine, but the guy I got it from (Julian Adams) has been...

    Looking for some seedling/nebari info

I found some scrap flat, hard plastic board laying around, so I'm going to try this way. I guess just about anything that a root will not grow through is feasible. Once they root(if they do), couldn't I break them apart and plant them separately to develop them on their own? Or should I...

    Looking for some seedling/nebari info

I recently came across a website on building nebari on tridents/maples using a tile of some sort and drilling holes in them to make some nice looking trees. I just ordered 10 new maple seedlings(1/2 trident & 1/2 JM) from Kaede-en's website, and want to get some more info on it. If I do recall...

Need some advice diagnosing a white buildup on two of my trees.

I would take a soft brush and clean the base of that juniper first off. I own one juniper myself and it looks very similar to yours even though, it was a freebie since it was on deaths doorstep. I don't have much experience with junipers, so maybe someone else can chime in.

Ebay actually has something useful, please tell me I'm wrong!!!

Those tools are intermediate at the least. I just bought a set of stainless steel concave cutters for 50% off (retail $55). It took me a week of shopping around before I found that deal. They should arrive in the mail today. If it were me I would skip out on these and I'm sure you could find a...

    Soil Wars-Turface

I can honestly say that over the past few months of my new venture into bonsai that using a turface mixture ($12 = 50# bag of turface, $10 = 25# bag of peat, and $8 = 25# of chicken grit) is by far the cheapest most efficient way to go about growing quality trees in MY USDA zone. All together I...

    Seived Bonsai Soil for Sale

Ditto! I'de say take out that shale or whatever the larger stuff and you got something to sell. All I can find around my area is turface, grit, peat at a 4:2:1/4 ratio. I got that from Julian Adams from Adams bonsai. Works for him and works for me. We are in same climate zone as well.

    What is this?

Grow it in a pot and see what happens... there are plenty more where that came from of all different sizes.. basically I did it for shits and giggles! i was bored and needed something to do. I don't have any high expectations out of it! so if it works, it works. If it doesn't, it doesn't!
