    quick question

Thank you! One more thing, if I still have your attention :-) Is it correct that I should wait until I see new growth before I start any kind of fertilizing program? Thanks again!

    quick question

Generally, how long do you place your new bonsai in the shade after sculpting it from nursery material? I'm working with boxwood currently and have seen some different opinions and was curious what you guys practiced. Also, would the unheated garage work for a good location while it was...

Made a trip to the nursery!

Considering my zone, when would be a good time to start with one of these trees?

Made a trip to the nursery!

Thanks, that's the one I was leaning toward anyway... The one thing I wasn't 100% on was that it was one that was in a smaller pot... Not sure about the stump sizes... I'm pretty confident I can keep it alive (hopefully not naively)... I've been gardening and landscaping for a long time...

Made a trip to the nursery!

sorry... very much a normal nursery. These were in pots that I would guess were anywhere from 1 to 3 gallon sizes from $8 to $20.

Made a trip to the nursery!

While it's still early to find nurseries that are stocked up right now, I decided to take a trip to see what they had. I found some decent pots and was able to chat it up with the owner for a while. Anyways, I found some junipers that could be decent candidates. I wanted to post the types...

    Give me something to do!!!

I had no problem at all with your post! :-) Thanks I feel like I may have made too big of a deal over it... :-/ Must have been cranky at the time or something. Thanks! I will definitely consider those mediums. I'm thinking I'm going to try the NAPA oil absorbent stuff that's just...

    Give me something to do!!!

The only reason I said that it wasn't bonsai yet is because I thought I had phrased my question wrong or something. I'm completely okay with the fact that potting soil would not be okay. It still astonishes me that potting soil would not be okay. I'm definitely not arguing the fact just...

    Give me something to do!!!

wow... nevermind. Never expected anyone to throw up on me against their will or to do my research... I never said I'd learned everything already... just asking a question... settle down, I won't ask YOU any more questions or for guidance "Doesnt matter if they are "bonsai" yet or not, potting...

    Give me something to do!!!

The trees wouldn't be bonsai yet, just recuperating from being taken out of the ground. I wouldn't do anything to them until next year when they are healthier. I've been doing a lot of homework about bonsai soil actually. The soil does have a fair amount of clay in it but does have a nice mix...

    Give me something to do!!!

I really appreciate all the guidance here! There tends to be a little conflicting information but no more than anything else you try to find information on! I'm definitely being patient but was just hoping for some safe suggestions of what I could be doing now... I definitely got that; thank...

    Give me something to do!!!

I sent you a pm. Thanks for the info! The speakers sound great! I have to be careful making commitments though... We have two youngens and two busy schedules but please let me know closer to the date for digging the hornbeam. Sounds like fun and I'd be able to ask the million questions I'm sure...

wow, had no idea! I had found a club in Richmond but this looks pretty cool too! I know what I'll be looking into tonight! However, I was looking for some more hands-on ideas I think :-)

    New Dwarf Barbados Cherry

I like the look of that tree a lot! And I was just thinking that I needed something for scale... :-) Where can you get something like that?

    Give me something to do!!!

Okay, here's the deal. I get a bit obsessive when I first get into a new hobby. It was the same way when I got into reef tanks (aquariums that focus on coral and fish common to coral reefs). That was about ten years ago and I'm still going strong. Now I'm getting into bonsai and feel the...

    lava rock

Which site are you guys talking about?

    lava rock

size what's a good size for each piece of rock for general bonsai use? Should I make it pretty uniform in size to the napa stuff?
  19. J

    lava rock

I think I'm leaning toward crushing some and mixing it in with the napa stuff. I don't have any trees yet so I'm only doing enough for a few pots and shouldn't be too bad. Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!

    lava rock

while I'm at it... I also plan to use Diatomaceous Earth. I found that Napa sells the stuff as an absorbent and many use it for bonsai. It looks pretty good. Would there be any need for the lava rock if I plan to use this? Does 3 parts diatomaceous earth to one part pine bark sound okay...

    lava rock

I'm really heavy on the questions lately. I apologize for asking questions that have been asked previously. Some people take offense to that and others are more than happy to chat. So while I do read a lot, I think I'll still ask questions as I usually don't find an opinion about what exactly...

    fertilizer

Thank you! I think that is what I was looking for. The organic green dream for slow release and the bonSai pro for daily watering. I really like the trace elements that's inluded there. You have any favorite sites to order from? I don't have any local sellers unfortunately. Someone else...

    fertilizer

Juniper and my soil will be mostly inorganic so fertilizer will be important... lava rock, pine bark, and the napa absorbent material (diatamaceous earth)... I'm leaning toward the organic green dream bonzai fertilizer for slow release. And also a biweekly balanced fertilizer that I haven't...

    fertilizer

I plan to use a slow release fertilizer along with a biweekly fertilizer. Is there a brand, style, or type that is better than others for general bonsai use? Recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!
