    trunk splitting/widening opinion

I would like to approach this in a different direction, now lets say air-layer to create a shorter trunk section and a more compact look. What is a time frame of successful root development through air-layering?

As you should, during numerous hikes I have come across some of the most amazing naturally grown specimen I have ever witnessed, that being said since I have only taken 2 from the area and unfortunately did not have success for a variety of reasons, I am more willing to let them be so they may...

I am uncertain how I can just obtain said larger stock, as if all my local nurseries have an abundance of fantastic usable stock. Grow it, yes with time. perchance it, possibly most nurseries carry sapling similar to what I've purchased, or its a 4"-6" diameter tall and lengthy transplant tree...

    trunk splitting/widening opinion

so maybe I'll just be specific in my location as I will not find most deciduous trees available in this region. Grand Junction CO arid high desert area, although the CO river runs through it, there aren't many desirable species growing around the river. Invasive species Tamarisk/Salt Cedar, elm...

    trunk splitting/widening opinion

I know what your saying and the diagram would be the most ideal of options but lag bolt have a relatively harsh angle taper compared to a standard wood screw

    trunk splitting/widening opinion

the end result would definitely be to create a hollowed base from one side, hence the undesired full split technique. and at a later point the interior would be removed along with the lags to in a sense shortcut to increase girth but to create a cavity for future carving/hollow

    trunk splitting/widening opinion

so your thinking that it may create a full split? the potential tree is relatively young and small trunk diameter, and I don't have any experience with maples. I cannot say for sure if they would difficult to remove, I have never done it. my guess is that no they wouldn't, a lag bolt is made...

    trunk splitting/widening opinion

I am looking to open up the base of a bloodgood maple. I have seen a variety of methods to split the base of trunks from root mass up, on variety of species, but I am looking for a more invasive process that doesn't involve a full split, more of a one directional forced wedge. if lag bolts were...

    Calamondin orange tree flowering

I have considered a harsh trunk chop and starting over with development, as well as air-layering, and just letting grow as an uninteresting upright is there any potential for a thread graft, or any kind of graft really? to try and bring more branching growth from the big straight section

    Calamondin orange tree flowering

it is actually 1" diameter and I do not have a trunk clamp nor do I think it would bend easily. If I had obtained it at a younger stage it could have been done, I understand that it is not an appealing form in bonsai standards. I am not familiar with working larger diameter bending techniques...
