How’s this for a first wiring? And other styling advice

I think you may have the cart in front of the horse. I don't know, but I can't see the base of the tree and the spread of the roots, so I can't see the front of the tree. I like to get my roots established and determine the front of the tree before anything else. Then I can see how the branching...

    Replacing Shoots With Different Cultivar

Many Japanese maples are grafted and many are shunned as bonsai subjects primarily, not because of the graft scar, but because of the difference in the bark color and texture between the cultivar and the host maple. This can be remedied by ground layering the base above the graft or taking...

At what time to remove top on my larch?

If I were growing this tree, I would let it grow on for another five years at least before I started worrying about where to chop and crop. Let the tree show you it's potential. I don't put a lot of account on sacrifice branches thickening the trunk although they do some, what really builds a...

    Dawn redwood seedlings

BTW, if you don't know the Jonsteen Co, they're a great bunch of folks in No. California and a great resource for many native species, but especially Redwoods. They are very active in the preservation and propagation of our wonderful national resource.

    Dawn redwood seedlings

The Dawn Redwood is very easy to start from cuttings. Buy one, grow it out a couple of years and you can start all your trimmings. I've rooted 1/4" stems, but usually take about 1/8". In one season they're shooting roots out the bottom of the pot. Oh, and I usually take them now, just as the...

    Recovering a late re-potted tree.

To me that's a bit of an overkill. It's early in the season and I have repotted maples at this stage many times. I usually just set them back in the shade for a few days until I see the tree responding positively. Then move it out to a few hours of morning sun for a few days and if it's...

    How to propagate Coast Redwoods?

They root cuttings very easily. I use the sand from pumice with very good success. Once the trees you have get well established they will begin to produce sucker shoots around the base of the tree and from the surface roots. These can be collected and started for more tree. The cuttings I'm...

    Collected Red Huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium)

On forty acres of forested mountain top I have these in every possible situation. True that they are happier in the understory, but I also see them exposed where it's been logged and growing in clay (that famous Oregon red) and rock, far from any water source. Big difference! Compared to the...

    Collected Red Huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium)

Very nice! Lots of this in my neighborhood and I've collected a few. Usually as a result of digging something else, but I've potted some and have had no luck keeping them going for more than a year or two. Any tips you can give away would be much appreciated.

WTB Coast Live Oak or Coyote Bush

I've bought coastal live oak from the Jonsteen Co. in No. Cal. They'll ship anywhere in the US. Also can get them at Forestfarm.com.

    Pumice - east coast resource?

Badatusernames, how much pumice do you need? Are we talking gallons or cu yds? I'm in SW Oregon where pumice is readily available. PM me and we'll talk about getting it to you. I can send sifted pumice, no sand or dust, all usable product. Don't want to say too much, but on the cheap to you. PM...

    Western Juniper

I had this tree in a full sun position and it lost a lot of foliage. I moved it to a shadier spot last summer and it rejuvenated very nicely. Much better color and no more brown out. Hoping to get the roots sorted out and repotted this spring. Thanks for your interest and I'll try to keep it...

    Sucker Play?

It would not be uncommon to get a very nice Japanese maple from the understock. They are seedlings and a good many cultivars have been derived from selected seedlings.

    English Hawthorn / Common Hawthorn

Just to clarify, I don't see English Hawthorne here. Cratagus oxycantha is English Hawthorne. The name means sharp or acute thorn. Needle like thorns and I'm not seeing those like I do on my EH. Common Hawthorne in the PNW is Cratagus monogyna. It's a completely different critter. Persnickety...

    Trident maple from seed

I guess I'm lazy about it, but I just go out in springtime and collect the sprouted seedlings right out of the landscaping. I know several sites around town that produce a good crop of seedlings every year. Just have to beat the landscapers to them or they weed them out. But they never get them...

    Juglans Nigra (Black Walnut) 1

I wish I could be of more assistance, but I really haven't had any kind of schedule for pruning. Most have been chopped at least once, but I've been primarily concerned with keeping them growing. I do no leaf mass reduction at this point, but will once they're established as a forest planting...

    Juglans Nigra (Black Walnut) 1

Very interesting indeed. I have eighteen Black Walnut trees in pots that are getting on to some age now. Oh, ten to fifteen years I been dragging these from place to place. They're just starting to look like trees and not so much saplings. Some have grown very nice burls at the base and most...

    Bonsai Raft Question

I am creating a raft forest with an airlayer branch on a Kiyohime JM. I did some preparatory pruning and removed all downward branches to the trunk. I just removed the airlayer yesterday and planted it with the entire trunkline buried. The Kiyohime roots cuttings fairly easily so no additional...

Dawn Redwood wilting out of the blue.

I wouldn't do any root work at this time of year. Keep it well watered and shaded as much as possible. Make it through the heat and give it a good repotting in spring. You might add a water tray under, or set the whole thing inside a bigger pot full of chunky pumice to help keep the roots cool.

Dawn Redwood wilting out of the blue.

I'd say that your container is way too small for a DR that size. Probably pot bound and the roots can't support the mass. I grow my dawn redwood in sifted pumice. I find the small grade to work good with them. I keep them in full morning sun, shaded by noon and I water once a day and maybe a...

Red currant (Ribes rubrum) first styling

That's some gnarly currant! You did a great job with it. I see these growing in the woods around here, but I haven't collected any yet. Nothing like that bad boy!

    misplaced concern ??

It looks like a cultivar characteristic. Many Japanese maples have red coloration in the leaves. I have one that flushes out red and those turn green and the consecutive new leaves are red with the older green leaves as a background. Not a cultivar, just an exceptional seedling.
