    Fresh pots

I don't normally fire in electric kilns, so I don't really have a 'hold period'. I usually fire gas kilns in reduction or atmospheric firings in wood or soda kilns. On a medium reduction I typically fire up to cone 08; begin body reduction. After that the kiln blasts up to cone 7 then begin...

    Fresh pots

Are you just firing the pots unglazed in reduction? At 06 the clay doesn't vitrify and there's no body reduction that takes place at that temperature allowing the clay body to absorb the carbon and gain it's 'toastiness'. Definitely best to fire a bonsai pot to cone ten to be safer in colder...

    Fresh pots

Looks good man. A 22" oval is no joke!! That's a decent sized pot. Hope drying and firing goes well on it for you.

    Fresh pots

With slab pottery I've built up to a 26"x18" pot. Throwing, about 15".

    Fresh pots

They do kind of look like they're still spinning. Lol I typically hand/slab build all my bonsai pots, but then I got into throwing last year. It's so addictive!! Now I've been going back and forth between hand building and throwing bonsai pottery.

    Fresh pots

Progress on a new dragon pot. Some freshly thrown pots. Left; Porcelain. Right top; Laguna 900 brown bodied clay. Bottom right; Laguna B-Mix Stoneware. The two pots at the top were thrown last night. After allowing to dry to leather hard I will carve feet and drainage/wore holes. The...

    Pot worth trying to fix?

What ever you do don't use bondo or fiberglass. Bondo is porous and will absorb water, swell and crack. Fiberglass won't adhere to a high fired pot...especially with constant moisture present. It too absorbs water, unless you get into applying gelcoat to seal off the raw glass. If you're...

    Rock Slab Pottery (ceramic)

Hi Joe. Thank you for your kind words as well. I definitely see a multitude of things that I will do differently in my future builds of rock/slab pottery. This pot is large (for me) around 26x21" on the inside measurements. I've never measured the total length and width of the pots exterior...

    Rock Slab Pottery (ceramic)

Thanks you Mike, Vance and Zach! I appreciate your kind words. Not a bad first shot at this type of design. Definitely see things I will do differently on future slab designs. Looking forward to building more.

    Rock Slab Pottery (ceramic)

I built this "Rock Slab" style pot for my mentor earlier this year and finally got around to firing it recently. It's the largest pot I've built to date. Can't wait to see it potted up next year.

    Procumbens air layer

Oh man...I'm glad to finally be out of the cold. We've hit 80 degrees here one day...mid 60's on average right now. Think I'm going to did at least one up.

    Procumbens air layer

They're well established. They've been planted for five years I know...not sure how long they were there before.

    Procumbens air layer

I'm seriously debating it. I can dig them out of the ground, but it's practically already May. I'd hate to dig them up just to kill them...I'd rather just leave them for the next people.

    Procumbens air layer

I have the option to dig them out, but I was uncertain whether or not it was too late to dig junipers. How late in the season can you go with them?

    Procumbens air layer

As I expected. I've done it on deciduous trees before, but I didn't figure the time would be enough for conifers. I appreciate it.

    Procumbens air layer

Hi all, I have a few procumbens landscape plants that I'm interested in air layering. Trunks close to 2" in diameter. I'll be having to move in August; has anybody air layered larger trunks on vigorous procumbens? I don't want to kill the tree by not having enough root production to sever it...
