Has anyone made a pot out of 1x6 inch boards? Will wood stain harm the bonsai?

I'm looking into buying a J larch. This is a new species to me, What care does it need in the winter? Once dormant can it be put in the shed like a J maple?

Had it for a year now and growing very well. I have it in my window with plenty of light. I would like to let it grow to develop a thicker trunk. What do you guys think?

I bought it at Home Depot last year. It was pathetic looking even more than it looks now. I've been giving a good shot of 30-20-20 Azalea fertilizer. Something went wrong with the pics, I'm having trouble making them right side up...sorry. Tell me what you think.

Looks like my green Japanese maple is root bound in its 4 inch pot. Unfortunately we are in the middle of the summer in NYC. Is it possible to just slip the root ball in a bigger pot with fresh bonsai soil?

I recently bought a 10 pack of Shimpaku pre bonsai. I'm looking to repot them in a 1 gallon nursery pot. Can I use for example mircle grow potting soil? Would any store bought soil work?
