    Boxwood Winter Care

I have a couple boxwoods here in Michigan (5b). One is a small Kingsville. It spent last summer in a southern facing window indoors. It did fine. The other is a larger unknown type. This is my first winter with this guy. In this environment, what is the best practice for overwintering? My...

    Pale foliage on “Nana”

So I have this little mallsai sitting around, and I’ve noticed that to foliage near the tips is much more pale than deeper inside the plant. I don’t think I’ve seen this before - thoughts? The foliage is all soft and tender - no signs of becoming brittle.

    Juniper Branch

See attached photos. This is a branch on a Shimpaku. I have been removing the inside grown as it pops up, but it has left the branch bare inside. Is this the wrong strategy? The problem is, there isn’t any other branch that I can bring over top of it to fill th3 void. It’s one of the only...

    Repotting a “Struggling” Juniper?

One of my junipers came out of winter looking quite beat up. One of the branches has foliage that is almost certainly dead (it will become a Jin), and the rest doesn’t look healthy either. I’ve had this guy a few years in the same container and soil it came in. I think the soil is starting to...

Maple Branching Structure - Where to Cut?

A couple years ago, I obtained a big Amur Maple stump and haven't given it much attention. I've only hedge pruned it, and now the branching sucks, so it's time to fix it and properly work the branches. I've attached a photo of what some of the branches look like. The main branch will be long...

    Close call ...

High winds nearly knocked this one off the bench, but the tree had different plans. I shall now call this Juniper “Cliffhanger” ...

    Amur Maple Resource(s)?

I have an Amur Maple stump that has been left to grow basically wild for the past 2 seasons. It's been hedge trimmed (yikes!) to keep a basic shape, but when the leaves come off, the branches are a mess. I've read a lot about Trident Maples, and how they are defoliated to encourage...

    Ponderosa Pine - Styling Question

This pine was from Andy Smith. I picked it up a couple years ago. The challenge I see in styling this tree is the right trunk, which has a “V” near the base. The right part of this junction has nice movement, the left side is very straight and moves backward, away from the front. It is also...

    A few pics with questions...

I have a couple trees which aren't looking 100% and I could use some advice. Th first is an Amur Maple. The leaves don't looo great. Is this a disease? The second is a San Jose Juniper. Parts of the foliage are yellowing down near the woody part. Is this normal while the new growth gets...

    Juniper bark issue

I have a juniper (I think a procumbens), and it has old bark that has been flaking off. In the attached photo you'll see a large portion of the old bark that has been tore off. Will this harm the tree? Should I be removing the old bark in favor of the bark underneath?

Oops - nicked bark with wire.

Nicked the branch of this maple when wiring a branch today. Will this kill the branch? First time I've nicked on :/

Garden Center Juniper Species Suitable for Bonsai?

Greetings from Michigan. The garden centers here are beginning to stock up. The closest bonsai nursery is ~100 miles away, so I'm curious what species of junipers are suitable for bonsai that I might find in a garden center. I'm familiar with Procumbent 'nana' - and I've seen quite a few of...

Trident - No Buds in Spring?

So, I left my Trident out in the elements in Winter this year (in Michigan). That's probably a mistake, because they're not hearty enough to survive our winters. It's sitting on the bench next to an amur maple. The amur is budding up, but the trident shows no signs of new buds. If I snap a...

    Shimpaku Color Change? Normal?

I've noticed that my Shimpaku is losing its vibrant green color. See the attached photo. Is this normal for this time of year (in Michigan?)

    Advice - Procumbens (nana) Juniper

I recently picked up a Procumbens juniper from a bonsai nursery. I enjoy the movement of the trunk and that it already has some established branching. I'm still newish to Bonsai. The tree isn't very tall ... and when I look at photos of procumbent junipers for inspiration, I try to imagine...

    Amur Maple Stump Advice

Need some advice :) I picked up this fat Amur Maple from a bonsai nursery. It was the fattest one they had. There are lots of young shoots as you can see. I haven't had material like this before. In the future, this piece will obviously need carving ... but what should I be doing right now...

    Apple trees suitable for bonsai?

My brother-in-law just purchased a house located on an old apple orchard. Lots of old gnarly trees with branches that could be air layered into bonsai. Do Apple trees make good bonsai? These are pretty standard apple trees for the area (Michigan), Red Delicious, etc. Thanks.

    B&B Nursery Stock

I have my eye on a tree a local nursery. It's a large Japanese maple, and my only hesitation with buying it is that it's a Balled & Burlapped tree. What sort of special treatment needs to be given to a tree with B&B clay soil? What is the process of getting the tree from it's current state...

    Spider Mite on Juniper?

All, Can you take a peek at the attached photo? I did the paper test with two of my junipers that seem to be losing a bit of color and I found several of these guys. Is this a spider mite? What is the treatment plan? Thanks!

Failed Air Layer - Still Time to Succeed?

Hi all. It appears my first attempt to air layer has failed. This is a Seiju Elm that I air layered a month ago ... I took the spaghnum moss off today to peak at it, and it looks like the tree is healing itself rather than growing roots at the layer. So my question is ... can I still...

Ugh. This is a lot harder than it looks :)

Happy 4th of July! So .. I have a few trees now, a few of which I bought styled, and some that are raw material. I tried my hand at wiring for the first time today and realized that branch placement is a lot harder than it looks on YouTube :) I'm embarrassed to show these, but I need to...
