    Making Crimson Queen cuttings

Hello gents/ladies, I have an old healthy 4' Crimson Queen japanese maple tree. I live in Zone 6a in New Jersey. I started a new thread rather than hijack the "Making Japanese Maple Cuttings" thread started sometime in '08(?). I've attached pics. I've gathered the following information so...

    First 3 little guys arrived

Got two plastic collanders. 9" wide x 4" deep. These guys are going to look itty bitty in these. BUT, more soil should provide more insulation in winter. Also, a plastic collander won't radiate cold like a metal collander might. I plan on getting some conifer soil(1 gal. enough) like this...

    Help identifying Walsai

Under $12. Yes, I consider them inexpensive. I actually pulled up all that junk when I was there. I was surprised how much of that useless junk there was and how little soil. I'd imagine, I'd have to repot both right away though I believe both species are sensitive to moving(??). I...

    Do you hang Bonsai?

After starting tomato plants in a hanging planter earlier this year, it got me thinking very recently. How many of you folks are hanging bonsai? I would think it would be an attractive presentation in a brown, fiber-lined blask basket and chain. regards,,

    Ticks! Ticks! and more Ticks!

Deet is good. But Permethrin is "better" and scentless. Perfect for hunting gear. Caveat: I don't put it on stuff I'm going to sweat through..ie-tshirt, undies. How I do it: Spray in on the clothes that you want to use, leave them laying out or hanging up to dry. Wear. I just don't wash...

Hello all! 3" nana basic question

Beautiful, keri. Really thought provoking. Not sure that's a reasonable way to describe trees, but that's my take. Re 6-8". That was what I expected from the ad in both height and width. If you add the plastic liner, then we're talking 6" high. Width on two of the three is 6-8".

    Help identifying Walsai

Ficus Guy Mites, eh? Do you have the same problem for all Fukien tea? I see from your "quick" styling that you either have a good deal of experience or have a braveheart *OR* both ;) Nice blog.

    Help identifying Walsai

Pictured below are two specimens available at Walmart. I'm not exactly sure what they are, but, one of them they looked like ficus. To my untrained eye, a couple have some interesting trunks.

Methods for harvesting pine/fur bark in the wild

Rubbed me some more fresh bark today. Still need more :)

    First 3 little guys arrived

Ok, so I will winter them in the garage. I shouldn't worry that there is almost no light. If I'm understanding correctly, this encourages the tree to be dormant, a period which it needs to be healthy. I'm going to get a couple plastic collanders. Avoid metal, yes? I'm noting one...

    First 3 little guys arrived

Here in NJ zone 6a, we saw periods of weeks with temps below 15F and periods of below 0. The garage isn't exactly airtight either. The garage would doom them, IMO. I'm thinking maybe window sill with only about 2-3 hours direct sunlight at most. Dunno...

Methods for harvesting pine/fur bark in the wild

Indeed. Seemed all so common sense to me after looking at the pine. Man don't know what a man don't know. Reminds me of the wife that asked her husband to peel 1/2 the potatoes. She comes back, looks inside the pot and finds 1/2 the potatos peeled, as requested. Every potato had exactly 1/2...

    First 3 little guys arrived

Not sure where the collander comes in. :o Forgive me. I don't know who Brent is, but I'm sure he must be a highly esteemed bonsai enthusiast. ;) Can't fine Boon's mix online either. Well, I do have "fresh" Miracle grow all purpose potting soil on hand as well. Guess I could break up the...

    First 3 little guys arrived

Hmmm... Maybe, take some of the pine bark I collected yesterday, break it all up finely and mix it with potting soil. My concern being not wanting to sog the roots out by overwatering the dense potting soil and kill these little guys, growing them bigger in potting soil with the particles of...

    First 3 little guys arrived

Thank you. I'm a little nervous about making/getting the right soil mix, though. I'd like to follow the following: BUT, I'm nervous about getting the ratios incorrect... I'm completely new to this and relatively new to horticulture in general. Thanks for the encouragement.

    Little tree, big image

I wish there was a "Like" button. The photography and the specimen are both exceptional.

    First 3 little guys arrived

Whelp, my first 3 pre-bonsai arrived and, as expected, they are very much on the pre size. They look as though they are really cramped in their 3" plastic liners. Signs of good growth. Should I consider potting them up a size right away? Or just water them and leave them in sun for the...

Methods for harvesting pine/fur bark in the wild

Thanks for all the helpful posts. My "hand-picked" bark should be just fine though, no? Seems to me, that it would decompose less quickly than the already decompossing mulched stuff. I thought it was for soil airation and drainage and slow decompositional values., etc...

Methods for harvesting pine/fur bark in the wild

Like mine fresh ;) I'll consider that route. Alot of tree rubbing to only cover the bottom of the 5 gal. bucket. heh.heh.

Methods for harvesting pine/fur bark in the wild

Ok guys. I see that I'm going to havest more fur/pine bark for the making of new soils for pre-bonsai. So far, the method that I tried today is as follows. Bucket in one hand, I use my other hand to rub up and down the tree catching some bark and the horizontal branches, I locate the bucket...

    Soil for repotting pre bonsai

Yeah, I know I'm getting ahead of myself a little, but the more info I learn the better. My 3 procumbens are due to arrive momentarily. :) They are going outside in good sun. No messing around with them other than keeping them alive and figuring out there water consumption. At least, that's...

Hello all! 3" nana basic question

Plastic liners should do, right? I've read a few places to not even bother moving it to pottery until its finished.

Hello all! 3" nana basic question

Interesting. Would one limit the size of the deadwood based on the current pot size? How is that determined?
