Anyone with info on growing ash as bonsai?

As always, beautiful work Walter! Alas, the only true white ash tree in my yard succumbed the ash borer beetle a couple of years ago. I'll have to go hunting for seedlings.

    Ulmus americana

So far so good in SE PA. Of course our humidity levels are much higher throughout the year. My two very small Chinese Elms are also surviving with full sun exposure and daily watering in the summer months. Doesn't Arizona have the hottest spot in the world? Oracle?

Anyone with info on growing ash as bonsai?

This looks like a mountain ash (aka rowan tree or devil's tree) to me.

Thank you Sorce. I found that one in my yard along with an assortment other golf balls over the years. I've also found aluminum shaft arrows sticking out of the ground with hunting broadheads. Not so good.

    From seed to bonsai

Hi Woocash, This is a Korean Red Pine in my care (aka Japanese Red Pine) that was grown from seed by a local bonsai artist. The tree is about 40-45 years old now. I refer to it as a Korean Red Pine because it is the national tree of S. Korea.

Hi, Here is my American Elm pre-bonsai attempt, the parent tree next door and a stray that is growing out of a rock retaining wall in my garden. The results look promising for bonsai. BTW, my son will be moving to Port Jefferson in a month. Small world!

what is the best wire for tying in trees--could fine SS cable work?

There is lots of very strong stainless steel fishing leader wire available including crimp on sleeves to terminate the ends. I don't have any Marlin or Tuna sized trees so I've been using aluminum and copper wire. I stretch it first to get it arrow straight and this also helps to harden it a bit...

    New JWP. Long and leggy:(

Another consideration would be to plant them in large planter pots/containers. Allow them to develop for a number of years and enjoy them for their unique structure and color. You'll have much better control over their environmental condition survival and can always sell them later for niwaki use.

    land/water pot

Very nice composition! If you want to disguise the dividing wall I found that the green sticky clay used by florists bonds well to smooth surfaces, hardens over time and can be removed if needed. Rocks and sand can be pressed onto the sticky clay. I've used it to make small moats in trays for...

    My Bonsai Bench Tool Organizer/Protector

Thank you! I appreciate the suggestions. I keep my bonsai tools in multiple tool rolls sorted by size. I found it too cumbersome to bring a tool roll outside only to use a few tools for a select task so this was my low cost (what's in the garage) solution. We have lots of humidity here in SE...

    My Bonsai Bench Tool Organizer/Protector

This is how I keep my bonsai tools protected and readily available to grasp on my cluttered outdoor bench top. The sharp, pointed tools go face down in the foam tubes and the blunt tools hang from the rim. It is made with a 4 inch (flat type) PVC cap fitting, a short piece of 4 inch PVC pipe...
