    $5 Maple with dieback

I dug down and found big circling roots, so it seems I will get some layering practice this spring, no? If I bare root in the spring, will that affect the viability of a successful air layer?

Nursery Japanese Maple end of season sale

Picked this little feller up for $15 today. Got it for practice and because I can't help but buy stuff to fart around with until I get a better feel for design and wiring and such. No idea on the variety, only that he told me it was a Green Japanese Maple variety. I'll post updates as I work...

    $5 Maple with dieback

Picked this guy up for $5 today. It was growing out of the pot and I don't have anything big enough to pot it up in and I don't have the space to put it in the ground, so it'll likely have to stay in this pot for winter. (if it makes it) I am interested in being a bit aggressive with this...

    Mugo monstrosity

Worked on this finally today. Hoping I folowed Vance's instructions correctly. It's now slip potted into a pond basket with granite/NAPA Oil Dry mix. Thanks again for the help, Vance!

Viking Black Chokeberry "Aronia melanocarpa 'Viking"

It is indeed about 3' tall. Any input on their viability as bonsai? I have had no luck searching for info. Is there a better known relative that I can pattern the care and shaping of this tree off of?

Viking Black Chokeberry "Aronia melanocarpa 'Viking"

I haven't taken pictures if the lilac yet (at least that's what I was told it was...I think :/) I will try to get around to it this evening.

Viking Black Chokeberry "Aronia melanocarpa 'Viking"

Just luck! I managed to get the Mugo I posted earlier as well as a snowball viburnum, lilac, and one more that I havent identified. The nursery worker informed me that they were just clearing out stuff from their stock after they had returned from summer shut down of about two weeks we have had...

Viking Black Chokeberry "Aronia melanocarpa 'Viking"

Anyone a friend of the Chokeberry? Another of my freebies. Advice/virts would be really helpful. I'm hoping I can have some fun with this guy and see where it goes THANKS, Jesse (Tried to outsmart the photo upload with pre-rotating...sorry for the orientation yo-yo'ing)

    Mugo monstrosity

Photos were taken with an iPad mini (took them with iPhone before that - but not in upper left... ) with the camera upright. They are all vertical and seem to rotate 90* counter clockwise after uploading (they even appear upright in the tiny thumbnail image just before I click "upload" and...

    Mugo monstrosity

Free nursery find (headed for the burn pile) Is that a trunk or just a big fat useless knuckle? Branches seem too thick as well as being bar branches and I'm not sure what to start thinking about styling. What is the cutoff for root work on Mugos? This guy is root bound and I'd love to...

    Help with Japanese Maple

The best advice I can give from a fellow beginner bonsai enthusiast is to understand that in order to achieve bonsai looks and characteristics you have to start from the roots up... If you have this tree dug and re-potted, leave it be for the rest of this season and allow it to try to survive...

    Unknown Juniper

Haha. Yeah, I gave up on it last night. I can't figure out why the pics get rotated like that. I will try to get it fixed sometime.

    Crimson Queen

Looks very similar to the lower growth and I couldn't spot a graft anywhere...doesn't change much to me except I will hopefully have two of them after I air layer in Spring.

    Blue Star

Am I correct in understanding that these do not back-bud well? If I cut back some of the denser growth in the most vigorous pads I can probably let more light to the interior...or am Ibarking up the wrong tree entirely?

    Blue Star

I took her out of the nursery pot and tried to get better shots of the interior.

    Crimson Queen

Here is the pic you requested. Hope that helps. I'm curious and don't know how to tell what it is.

    Freemasons?

Just curious if there are any other bonsai enthusiasts who are Freemasons? I am a member of Blue Mound Lodge #682 in Blue Mound, IL.

    Crimson Queen

If air layering, should I attempt it about halfway up - just above the lower growth? In Naka's Bonsai techniques 1 he says that July is an ideal month for air layering, but most of what I've read here says to wait until Spring. Thoughts on this? Is it too risky considering I just moved it to...
