Are my plants getting enough sun?

I built a bonsai bench to put in my backyard to put all my growing plants on. It is relatively close to the house, and the bench gets full sun from morning until about 1-2. I did it this way as I hear that you should protect against late afternoon sun here in south texas. Is this enough sun...

Ficus, yellow leaves with black spots

crazy, it took all the rains very well, its been super green for a while. Once the heat hit and I was manually watering, that's when I believe I started seeing the yellow. My guess is underwatered for the ficus, I will try to water twice a day and see what happens i guess. Maybe I need to...

Ficus, yellow leaves with black spots

It had been raining for like a month, so no watering for a while. Once it stopped I let it get a little dry then have been watering about once a day on average, sometimes twice when hot and skipped one day last week. Trying to water when the middle starts to get dry, not just the surface.

Not getting ample growth, other newbie problems

Thanks, scott. #1. I only considered it because its been pretty mild and I didn't think I was doing it right and need to improve and learn, I probably wont do it again unless absolutely necessary. #2. When I repotted the trident in the the "grow" dish I made, I basically bare rooted that...

Not getting ample growth, other newbie problems

Well, some updates. I pinched off the brown on the shimps and am fertilizing a bit more, no more recurring brown tips. It's been raining like crazy the last few weeks in Houston and the trident has some brown tips now, what is the culprit here?

    The rain won't stop

Most of my stuff is in 6" grow pots in a mix of turface, pine bark, granite, shale, and some lava. It holds water well but I guess it will be alright. it stays moist naturally for over a day, but there isn't any standing water and lots of holes in the bottom for drainage, hopefully it's okay...

    The rain won't stop

Here in Houston, it seems to have been raining off and on every day for about 2 weeks. As a newbie, I'm beginning to think its probably raining too much for my plants. Is this possible? Is there ever a time where it's rained enough and I should think about bringing the plants in under a cover...

    North Houston Bonsai Nurseries

I've poked around the HBS website for bonsai nurseries around the Houston area, but there really is a lack of online information regarding these places in terms of websites, reviews, stock, etc. I'm new to bonsai as this is really my second season to play and am located on the north side of...

markyscott, where do you buy your soil components in houston?

Not getting ample growth, other newbie problems

Thanks kelly. I tested using a moisture meter (has scale 1-4 with 1 being dry). If I put it in freshly watered pot (where water freely drains out the bottom) a few inches in the pot it always comes back between 1 and 2. That night I checked again, same general measurement, maybe just lower...

    Small size pumice? Any uses?

I sifted some pumice thru a 2.5mm screen. Is there any use for what falls thru? Shohin or any other use? Should I just add it back together? How about turface that fell thru the screen (assuming removing the dust)?

    Air-Layered with Chopped Sphagnum moss

Here's a pic of the one that died. I opened the bag and went ahead and chopped the top. Looks like the top of the layer cut calloused up or something. Anyone know what I did wrong?

Awesome, yea, I will definitely try again. I'm too stubborn to ever give up, lol. Having a blast learning and trying new things.

Not getting ample growth, other newbie problems

Thank you, great advice. It was seeming to me I was having drainage problems, seeing 2 of my problems are both drainage related and they are in the same type garden pot. Then it occurred to me, while the bench has a central drainage slot on the planks of the bench itself, the holes on the...

Not getting ample growth, other newbie problems

Thank you all for the replies. I fear the same for the jm, the bark was about that color since I got it, definitely didn't start green, maybe it was doomed from the start (I probably killed it). It needed a gentler climate anyways it seemed. This is why I'm learning on cheaper plants. I will...

Not getting ample growth, other newbie problems

I'm new to bonsai, but am always reading and learning. I make mistakes and learn, I've killed some nursery stuff (whoops) and am mainly in a stage where I want to get the basics (growing, repotting, pruning) down before purchasing anything really nice. I have probably 15-20 plants, most all...

    Juniper Bonsai dying?

If it was outside in this houston weather of late, its probably overwatered since it has been raining for what seems like 3 months.

    Air-Layered with Chopped Sphagnum moss

As a follow up, this little experiment was unsuccessful. I left these alone all winter and this spring the top half above the layer of one of the junipers browned off and died I guess. Will snap some pics tonight to figure out what was wrong (besides just the media used).
