Curious Black Pine needle color issue

Quick follow up. All the pines are again doing well, the issue was with my watering and specifically that I was watering far too much.

Curious Black Pine needle color issue

Update, I fertilized two days back and they're already starting to get much greener. Thanks fellows for the help! I feel I am wearing the dunce cap now after that bone-headed move. For those curious, I turned the pots up to see how the roots are doing (nice advantage of a grow pot) and...

Curious Black Pine needle color issue

I will post another photo tomorrow, but I did not see any of that sort of yellowing. The yellow is limited to the new growth only, all of the older growth remains dark green. I'll take a closer look at the soil, but did not see anything that looks like root aphids.

Curious Black Pine needle color issue

When I repot I will use lava-rocks only, in the interim I will back off on the watering and increase the fertilizing....and use some iron pellets. Thanks for the help!

Curious Black Pine needle color issue

I tend to agree, being that they received the same amount of sun last year and had no issues. Also, the other JBP in another pot sitting to the left of these is dark green.

about 1/2 hour ago. They get sun from about 11am on through 7pm

Curious Black Pine needle color issue

I haven't been that aggressive with fertilizer this year, using a heavy sprinkling of dr. earth every month, IIRC last year I was doing more than that. It's slightly bizarre to me that they're otherwise happy, with needles are pointing up and no wilting or strange coloring at their bases.

Curious Black Pine needle color issue

Adair, the soil is a combination of lava rocks, and pine bark, IIRC. It's mostly lava rocks, so if I water them within moments it will flush through.

Curious Black Pine needle color issue

I did decandle this year, and the needles from last years candles are the normal dark green.

The one on the left is slowly turning greener, and so is the one on the right but it's really taking its time.

Curious Black Pine needle color issue

Howdy, Been a good while, but I'm still keeping after my bonsai trees. I have three Black pines that are pre-bonsai. Two of them have not yet darkened the needles from their early growth light green to a mature darker green this year. I'm afraid that this is an early sign of the tree showing...

When to cut sacrifice/create new sacrifice on JBP

Thanks Eric(s). I have pretty much every major branch that I want, in the places I want them, so I'm working on filling them out and letting the trunk and nebari develop. So I will certainly be mindful of where the next sacrifice lands on this tree, as the next one might be tricky to place...

When to cut sacrifice/create new sacrifice on JBP

Thanks! That is a great article on it! Mine are no where near that size, so that gives a good idea that maybe I need to spend much more time letting it go.

When to cut sacrifice/create new sacrifice on JBP

Sounds good, I have one that is between a forked pair of branches that I think is going to be done this year. Do you generally cut them with in the fall or very early spring? It's a good portion of the trees foliage, so I dont want to risk the tree's health.

When to cut sacrifice/create new sacrifice on JBP

Afternoon Gents. I'm wondering how do you guys go about determining when it's time to cut a sacrifice. I have two pines in development stage, they both have sacrificial apexes and I'm wondering when to cut that apex and determine a new apex. Since my pines are still developing I assume I...

    Maple leaf Diagnosis?

I have been chalking up the occasional odd leaf to weird weather. They seem to come around very quickly when the weather warms back up. Spiders are great, I catch them sometimes in my basement and put them in my garden. I had a bug eating my Korean Hornbeam leaves....sprayed once to no...

    Wilt in the Wind

I have noticed that if I maintain my good weather watering schedule (warm/hot) that when the temperature dips 15 degree or so, the trees will all look slightly wilted even with the soil being moist.

We had cold this past winter that I cannot remember ever having experienced previously.

    Adventurous buds - Pine tree

Sorry for the delay; This is one I snapped last year while wiring; My juniper seems to have finally forgiven me for last years misdeeds; This one will probably remain a garden tree, I think I will cut the top and encourage the apex to branch out when it is about 8-10' tall. My...

    Adventurous buds - Pine tree

I'll take some pictures tomorrow. The one with the longest candles is in the ground, the but other two have some pretty decent sized candles (maybe 4") out of the apex.

    Adventurous buds - Pine tree

These guys are back budding very well now. I'm happy to see them showing new buds in older wood. Actually pretty happy with all of my bonsai and garden plants, the long winter seems to have done well for them as they are going well now, and on the low branches they're revealing buds at the...

    Maintaining Bonsai scissors

Presumably.....unless they have a serrated edge... Optical illusion, it's actually a rubber mat that I use to keep the stones from moving. I actually find the flat with a combination of noticing when the water pushes out from under the edge and simultaneously the shadow disappearing.

    Maintaining Bonsai scissors

This is how I maintain my bonsai scissors. I will first point out that I say that I am 'maintaining', and that is true, this is not a full sharpening but instead something that I will do after repeated use to maintain the edge. I do not misuse my scissors and therefore I do not need to work...
