OUTDOOR PROPOGATION USING DIFFERENT HYDROPONIC GROWING MEDIA

Hi @cmeg1 Very impressive. I was wondering how you see these roots ever becoming free from the rock wool? Does it eventually deteriorate? Sorry if this was mentioned before, there is a lot of technical info in these posts that fog me out. CW

Where do you get your bulk substrate?

Akadama and pumice are not readily available near us. Best bet is to join with your local bonsai club for shared purchases. Otherwise online I've bought some great and cheap lava from Partek Peat in Great Meadows NJ. See my post Here Pine bark is easier to find, but it must be sifted as the...

    Jump to New

Sometimes I will open a thread and as I'm reading, realize that its years old. Any chance that the "Jump to New" button could appear next to the up/down arrows that appear as you scroll the page? No biggie, just seems convenient. CW

    Consistently killing conifers. Confused.

Slightly off topic, but did you see THIS Craigslist posting? Maybe go see his trees, buy a few, and get some advice? I have no idea if this fellow knows what he is doing, I just happened across this today and since you're in NJ, I thought I'd mention it. And in case you don't know, @Walter...

    Consistently killing conifers. Confused.

I'm just a hack when it comes to finishing bonsai, but isnt anyone concerned with @ManSkirtBrew feeding every week? Does he do the same with his deciduous trees? Organic fertilizer? Just a thought from a 1-2 times per year fertilizer. CW

    Tree identification and help!

@Bonsaibillie99 Don't fret. Almost all of us have killed our first trees. That wasn't a particularly old or well developed tree, so sad as it might be if you lose it, re-use the pot and try something easier like a ficus (tropical and you can bring it indoors) or an elm (probably needs to stay...

Neighbor threw away a bunch of azaleas (I think)

Great find! If you look on azalea/rhododendron sites, you will find that they demand good drainage. Not an issue for bonsai usually, but watch the drainage on the ones you planted out in the yard. I too would vote for some hard pruning, otherwise you just have azalea bushes in a pot. CW

    Quince timing

So I have a flowering quince that has been growing in the ground for several years. I want to dig it up to get the roots in shape, do some chopping and separate out the suckers. The flower buds are swelling now. I seem to remember the leaves come after. I don't want to miss by prime digging time...

Why did you start, and continue Bonsai?

You have your first tree still!? Man, I can't even remember my first tree. I got interested as a 20 something after finding some old "Japanese miniature trees" magazine of my father's. Dad's gone and I'm sorry that I never asked him where they came from. Anyway, I fooled around and killed a...

    Is this ninebark bonsaiable?

Though little used, nine bark does seem to have some potential. I don't know your climate, (thought Yorkshire was in England)but you can usually dig up and "bonsai" a landscape plant just as buds are swelled and ready to open in the early Spring. Did you just recently prune that back? Would...
