Types of Moss, the good, bad & the ugly

I know there are many types of moss. And many species we call moss that aren't even technically moss. A recall seeing a post here or on a blog years ago that discussed the types of moss and if they were good to use as a top dressing when showing bonsai. It discussed how some were invasive...

    WPI Beech seeds

My son graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute last May. One of the historic "landmarks" of the university is a huge beech tree. He has been prodding me to start some seeds so some day we can have a bonsai as part of that history. So he collected a bunch of seeds and here we go. Started...

Kojo No Mai Cherry yellowing leaf

I have a couple of small rooted Kojo No Mai Cherry cuttings that have been doing fine until about a month or so ago. They blossomed in the spring, put out lots of new growth and leaves, everything seemed to be fine. Then in late June, when all the leaves started to get a little brown on the tips...

    Stained Glass Trees

My two interests/hobbies often intertwine. Recently I have been using trees as subject matter for my stained glass projects. Might look to replicate some scrolls or Bonsai into future work. Here is my most recent work, "Birch Trees in the rain".

Suburban Yamadori - aka Pine rescue

Hey Pineys - first off I am a mostly maple guy and have no experience with pines. So please be kind. I saw this pine in the "yard waste" pile on the curb on my way home from work this afternoon. I cleaned it up a bit and it looks like it might have some potential...at least it will be a...

    Patio Lights at night

I have a large patio deck and this is where my Bonsai are. I recently moved my Bonsai to an area on the patio that has better protection from the hot midday/afternoon sun. The downside is that we have a floodlight that is motion sensitive and it is on for a good part of the night. Even though...
