    Fertilize Olive?

Ok. I'll get some organic fertilizer and do it up once a week, until I bring it inside. No garage. I'm putting it in the coldest room of my house and using grow lights. Thanks guys.

    Fertilize Olive?

I've seen conflicting recommendations on fertilizing Olives. Some say only twice per year, others say once per month. I'm new to Olives, so what would you recommend?

    Fertilize Olive?

I received my Olive about 3 weeks ago. I slowly worked it into full sunlight and I think it's settling in well. Since I'm in New York I only have about 2 or 3 months till I have to bring the Olive inside because of the cold. Should I fertilize it, this late in the season? Or, wait till Spring?

    New Olive Question

So, I put the Olive in the sun for an hour yesterday. It'll be in the sun for 2 hours today. I think I'll do 2 hours per day through the weekend and start 4 hours per day early next week. Work up to full sun in 2 weeks.

    New Olive Question

That was a very good way of describing it! I understand what you mean. So, I'll slowly, over the course of a few days/week, acclimate it to the sun. Thanks to everyone for the help.

    New Olive Question

Is it illegal to order the tree from Israel? I won the eBay bid and they sent it to me. I assume it went through Customs.

    New Olive Question

I put it in the shade today. I'll start putting it out in the sun for a couple of hours tomorrow and then more the following day. Would that work?

    New Olive Question

I'm in NY. The seller wrapped the root ball in a kind of burlap, so I removed the burlap and potted it in well draining cactus soil. Gave it some water and have it outside on the south facing side of my house. I did all of this at dusk, so it hasn't gotten any sun yet. I realize that NY doesn't...

    New Olive Question

I just received a 12 year old Olive Tree that I ordered from Israel. I planted it in a large pot because I want it to grow out for a few years. The seller said that I should keep it out of direct sunlight for the first couple of weeks, but I would think that after spending a couple of weeks in...

    Indoor lighting for Little Ollie?

I've moved my Little Ollie Olive tree indoors for the winter. I do not get good sunlight thru my windows, so I jerry-rigged an artificial ight setup. I'm using a desk lamp with a 15w, 900 lumen florescent bulbs. The Ollie gets 6 hours of direct light per day. I'm wondering if I should get an...

    Fertilizing Winter Olive?

It's winter here in New York, so I moved my Little Olie into the house. It's getting 4 - 6 hours of light, I put the pot in a tray with a little water (for humidity) and I water it every few days. But, I feel like I should be giving it some fertilizer, even though some "care sheets" say that you...

    Good fertilizer for my trees?

Newbie question, I know. But what would you guys reccomend as a good fertilizer for my trees. If it matters, they are all pre-Bonsai's: Hibiscus, Europen Olive, Dogwood, and White Oak. So, liquid or solid? NPK level? Something affordable.

    Another freebie from the nursery!

Sorry. I don't know why the pics are sideways.

    Another freebie from the nursery!

I stopped by a local nursery and they gave me another plant for free! I'm not sure what it is, but I liked the trunk and figured I could work on it next Spring.

    "Rose of Sharon" Question

Thanks Darlene. When I saw it, it just stuck out to me. Ok, so I guess the consensis is to button it down for the Winter and see how it looks in early Spring. At that point I can trim the branches and roots, and repot.

Does anyone know why that stupid Counterfeit money thing posted on my thread?

    "Rose of Sharon" Question

I was thinking that those 2 on the right have to go too. I'm glad to see that my eye is starting to pick up on this stuff.

    "Rose of Sharon" Question

Thanks for all the info! Here's a full picture of her and a picture of the trunk. As you can see there is sporadic growth at the top, mostly. I did pull all of the weeds out. What do you guys think?

    "Rose of Sharon" Question

I took a trip to a local nursery and found a Hibiscus, "Rose of Sharon", with a really interesting trunk (I'll try to post pics of it later). The worker ended up giving it to me for free! It must have been sitting there for awhile because the soil was covered in weeds. Its in a 5+ gallon plastic...

    Warming wintering roots?

Ok. So if I didn't use a heating pad or cable, wrapped the pot in burlap and covered the soil in wood chips do you think I could just leave them in my shed, with no sunlight? Of course I would water them every couple of weeks.

    Warming wintering roots?

I've said, in another post, that I've seen a video where a guy talks about using reptile heating cable to keep his Bonsai's roots from freezing. Is this is a necessity? I realize that different trees/plants require different things. I have 1 Willow cutting in a 1 gallon pot, 2 pre-Bonsai White...

    White Oak Pre-Bonsai Question

I just ordered 2 White Oak trees. They should be approximately 10 inches tall and have their roots warped in damp cloth/burlap. Being still pretty new to Bonsai, I want to make sure I get this right. It's the beginning of Fall here in New York so once I get them I plan on unwrapping the roots...

Growing Out: Potting Soil vs. Bonsai Soil

I just posted a similar question. So, I thought I'd resurrect this older post and see if you ended up using the potting soil and, if so, how you think its working? I read an article that said that in order to thicken the trunk and grow out the tree you should use potting soil because it allows...

How to thicken 'Little Ollie' trunk?

Thank you. As you can imagine, its not to easy to find Olives around here. I actually had to order the one I have. I'll keep working on it and also keep looking for an older one. By the way, if your buddy has any more wedges to get rid of, hook me up! That one looks awesome!

    Nursery/Potting soil for pre-bonsai?

In my never ending Bonsai research I came across some information that explains why you should use nursery/potting soil for pre-bonsai. They say that the root system needed to grow a thick, strong trunk, grows more readily in that kind of soil, as opposed to grittier Bonsai soil. I will be...
