    Cascade anyone?

I think I had a mental block to styling something as a cascade. Luckily, I found this tree to open my mind about the concept. I think I had to find a true cascade to try it. The National show had a few cascades that really inspired me. Does anyone have any specific care or health tips...

    Collecting smaller Yamadori?

I’ve always thought that collecting potential shohin was much harder than finding good larger trees. On my last trip I decided to focus on smaller trees and a few Larch and Spruce are attached. I have focused so much on larger I’m curious what you shohin experts think of the potential of...

    Larch from a wild shore

This Larch was exciting from the beginning for me. I styled it for the first time today. I like to leave some parts long at first just in case. Thoughts on the styling and any ideas for a nice vessel?

    Bonsai in Italy?

I am in the Puglia region of southern Italy. I plan to visit the old Olives which seem to literally be scattered everywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions for bonsai or ancient tree sites in Southern Puglia region of Italy? It may be a long shot but I thought it would be worth a try.

    Quick styling Larch

The before picture is pretty hard to see but I thought I would post this Larch I just styled. It came out of the ground after 15 years two years ago. I set two or three main branches last year and just did more or less a full styling. I would love to find a rock to pot this in but rocks are...

How to keep wooden benches clean???

I use treated wood for my bench tops and they tend to get an ugly green around the pots that get watered. Does anyone have a tip or two to remove that and to keep it away? I was thinking about power washing. Anyone have any experience with this?

    A crazy deadwood planting

I’ve been really interested in planting in rocks lately but have not yet tried deadwood. This is an old Cedar stump that I found. I’m hoping these two will merge together in the spring to create something different and interesting. I treated the wood with wood hardener and I know it won’t...

    2018-2022 White Cedar Yamadori

I collected this White Cedar in the fall of 2018. At first I thought I might keep the whole thing but I wasn’t happy with my design idea so I did a pretty drastic reduction. I kind of ripped the upper half off and pulled down to tie in more deadwood through the mid section. Let me know...

If you could build any tree?

If you could build any tree with no limitations what would you create? If you could own any tree what would it be? Are the two different for you?

    A Field Grown Larch

Last year I picked up a field grown Larch from a friend who had lovingly grown the tree for many years. He did a great job in my opinion. I should have taken more before pictures but from what you can see let me know your thoughts on my initial work on the tree. It is a very strong tree and...

Larch with Taper.... they do exist.

Yes, I am crazy, probably clinically nuts. I drove about 9 hours yesterday to hunt a new area and collected one tree and I can't wait to go back. I have hunted for years for Larch with taper which in Michigan are nearly impossible to find but I found this tree yesterday with what seemed to be...

    Bonsai work from 2021

I thought I would post some of the things I was up to in 2021. I can't wait to get started on some things in 2022, spring always has an aire of possibility. Mostly I would like to have a spot on the internet to see what I was up to from year to year. Also, open to any thoughts or opinions...

    Shimpaku Juniper for sale

I have a treasured Shimpaku Juniper that I bought from @Brian Van Fleet maybe around 2016. I have always enjoyed the tree but find that with my time I prefer to work on native trees personally. I have not been able to give this tree the attention that it deserves. It is ready for a repot and...

    Large larch FULL of ants...

I was hoping the Bonsainut crew could help me brainstorm this. I just collected a beautiful larch yesterday, probably the best larch I have ever collected. The foliage looks very healthy on this big tree but I am quite sure that the trunk is hollow and the tree has a ton of ants in it. When I...

    Hunting for trees

I recently secured some permission at an interesting property in Michigan. I had a fun time with the father in law searching all the nooks for good Larch. I’ve never needed a pry bar so badly. I will update this thread with the trees as I box them up. They are currently submerged and...

    Potentilla collection!

One of my favorite things about bonsai is the extra appreciation for the nature in my state. This collection brought me to a place that was really inspiring. Very much like a desert on this private property. Not a big area, but full of character. Anyway, I brought a few pieces of random...

    Larch on Rock

Last year I started putting together some rock into this pot. It took much longer to carefully attach the rock to the pot than to plant the three trees in it. The three larch are all collected by me last spring. I will let this all grow this year without any pruning. Next spring the first...

    Getting weird!

I’ve got a few plans in the making. Mostly I want to ask about the first picture. My plan is to make a larch forest on top of this rock. If this was yours would you leave the deadwood piece as an old dead tree surrounded by larch or would you not use the deadwood and just do a forest. I’m...
