I would keep it alive until spring. Remove any roots growing downward and place it ontop of a tile in the ground where you will get the fastest development. The tile will prevent roots from growing downward and will assist in growing a nice nebari.

If it were my tree, I would think about chopping between the first two branches. looks like you have a little bit of taper then a straight trunk.
