    Red Maple

Agreed, on Jay's Reds. I purchased one not too long ago and the material is excellent. A little reverse taper, but with Rubrums its hard to keep that in check. I second the notion on overwintering this in a sheltered location. Wind and cold will desiccate that tree faster than you think.

    Selling My Collection part 2

Hey, Jay. Just letting you know I received the Rubrum in great condition. Only a few snapped outer twigs. Amazing packaging by the way. Nearly indestructible. Anybody thinking of inquiring about Jay's trees should do so. Great prices on quality native stock.

    Literati Clump

So this is what I had in mind when I saw this clump. I feel like this is much more aesthetically balanced. The large gap between the left and right group, I felt, was very distracting and made the arrangement look cluttered.

    More Treasure

Well, I have truly outdone myself. And have more trees than I know what to do with. This Japanese Maple is one of about 50 (all around this size) I got today. Along with what will probably end up being around 2,000 more trees , composed of assorted species and sizes Ranging from crepes to...

    RootOverBrick Jap Map (THE CLAW)

It's meant to be a pet project and not anything substantial. I have a few of these. Bald cypress on a broken cherub head off a fountain. Water Elm on oyster shell. Nick Lenz has been a real inspiration to me over the last few years.

    RootOverBrick Jap Map (THE CLAW)

I mean like ROR..but ROBRICK. It's a paver, not a regular facade brick..The erosion will be negligible. I do have SOME foresight. lol

Bonsai in the USA- where is it and where is it going?

I agree with this. When Ryan Neil says treat Pinus Glabra like JWP(or whatever he says about referencing native pines to japanese black, white and red), I kind of make a face. I feel as though there isn't enough confidence within the American Camp ,and so much jading from japanese influence, to...

    RootOverBrick Jap Map (THE CLAW)

So the first pic is the proposed thread graft and it's position. Second is what I would like it to look like with only existing buds being used and an outline of the brick. The future hollow is where the scion met the rootstock. I'm hoping the future thread graft helps close it up on that...

    RootOverBrick Jap Map (THE CLAW)

Ok, so I've been playing with this thing for about two years. Spotted "THE CLAW" tipped over at my local Home Depot and was mesmerized. It had bloodgood grafted up top, and I soon got rid of that. Middle photo is spring 2013 after I chopped the bloodgood back hard to try and get a bud on the...

Bonsai in the USA- where is it and where is it going?

Sorry if I find your statement a little misinformed, but the reason the Japanese can do what they do is generational teaching and the cheap labor that comes from it. No one in the US has a whole family worth of children being taught to selectively prune JBP en mass. We would have to pay a decent...

    Demand for Decent Cryptomeria Stock?

The fact they aren't true to seed is the reason why you don't see many propagated this way. vars, "Yoshino" is a very fast growing cultivar with a pretty much predictable growth pattern. I could see someone using "Yoshino" to get a nice large specimen in a relatively short period of time...

    Demand for Decent Cryptomeria Stock?

You should check into the cultivar "Bandai Sugi" Simply stunning growth pattern. I'm looking into propagating a lot of said material. Just seeing if there is even a market in the US for such pre-bonsai stock before I make any investment.

    Demand for Decent Cryptomeria Stock?

You just don't see many nice US specimens. I'm just wondering if there is any real reason why this is(other than they are a pain in the ass to upkeep). With the many cultivars suitable for bonsai, you'd think they'd be in more collections. Personally, I love the damn things. Any opinions on...

    Looking for Options

Definitely worth the 80 if the drive isn't terribly far...The trunk is there, branches you can develop. I'd buy....Also, it might be worth the contact alone if he has any other decent stock. Actually, after looking at the other angles, it might not be worth it. Exposed stilt roots are not...

    Trident Treasure

Here is the suspect foliage. Some areas show the 3 central lobes enlarged more than others, but , to a certain extant, it seems to be a common trait all around.

    Trident Treasure

Your speculations emulate mine exactly. The genetic variability of japonicum and palmatum is a subject I'm well acquainted with (I have worked within the nursery business for close to a decade). I just found it strange that the single Jap in the bunch had foliage resembling the tridents. The...
