Bonsai auctions and “imported” trees. Legal or not?

Lately on the Facebook bonsai auctions there have been a lot of really nice trees up for auction that look like recent Japanese imports. What are the rules of selling trees that have recently been imported? Do we care about import laws? Do we care if a tree we buy was legally imported? Or just...

    JAPANESE SNOWBELL

When I see quality of the styrax in the Kokufu I am surprised there are not more people growing them. I put 50 into the ground last year in hopes of having something workable in 5-15 years. Seem very forgivable and perfect for bonsai. Hope to see more around.

    Jbp Half-bare root suggestions...

I would spend the year keeping this one fed and getting it nice and strong. Then in the fall do a proper cleanup and then work the second half of the roots in spring of 24. It shouldn't miss a beat and set you up nicely to start regular maintenance on this one.

    Help for Black Pine backbudding

Spot on. Trees will backbud when they are healthy and vigorous. Get the tree healthy and let it go for a year, don't touch it. When its full and pushing growth then you can start refining the tree and it will backbud nicely for you. Good luck.

Japanese white pine (goyomatsu) on their own roots

Bareroot is fine for the young jwp in the spring they wont miss a beat. But I would protect from freezing temps after you do so as you would with anything you repot. Good luck

    Looking for JWP

I have been researching pine cuttings and came across this paper in using eastern white pines and perhaps it may be of use to you. I know species react differently with cuttings but this paper identified June as the best month for success with eastern white pines. I am curious to how this may...

    Looking for JWP

Good luck I wish you the best. Once my parent plants get established I want to start makings cuttings of JBP and JWP corkies. The lack of JWP seedlings around is very sad. I want to put several dozen in the ground but have no source.

How big of a sin is it to repot a tree right now? (Early Summer)

If it is thriving on your deck then I would leave it in its thriving condition and think about what you want out of this tree and plan what it will take to get it there. Then repot it next spring when the time is better. If its thriving then there is no need to repot it now.

    Corkbark JBP male/female cones

    Ground Growing vs. Colanders

Are these black pines all grown in containers or have they spent anytime in the ground. I see these ones are sitting right on the ground and after looking at your website I see you have some sitting on landscape fabric. Do you find the ones on the fabric still have escape roots? Do you find the...

    Ground Growing vs. Colanders

I like trays for starting young trees. You can put 9 seedlings in those trays you bought and trim their roots before potting them up, and put them on a tile in the tray too. I like to put these trays on the ground so the roots can escape and help the trees grow faster. After and year or two so...

    Huge a$$ trident

I would keep the multi trunk and maybe trim them back to the next set of branches. Check out andbonsai, they have alot of photo progressions of some of the awesome deciduous chunky material they collect in Europe. This is no different than the material they work with, 10 years and it will look...

Sourcing corkbark pines to grow in the ground

I have a cutting grown cork bark from Brent, and I guess I am now spoiled since the exposed roots develop corking too. Here is a photo. I have some grafted material and don't like that you can see the graft lines. My goal is to plant out a few rows of corkbarks on their own roots here at the...

Sourcing corkbark pines to grow in the ground

Ye I guess I was more referring to cutting grown young trees then since it seems they will not reproduce from seeds.

Sourcing corkbark pines to grow in the ground

I want a smooth transition from the nebari to the trunk. Want to grow in the ground long term and don't want something unsightly.

Sourcing corkbark pines to grow in the ground

Title pretty much sums it up. I have been trying to find some cork bark pine seedlings to grow in the ground for years. I’ve tried growing seeds from a cone from an Ondai, but no luck. Most corkies you find online are grafted and I would rather have no grafts. Anyone know of any or have some...

JRP - Choosing back buds to develop branch structure

Leave them all there and let them grow out until they are an established shoot. Right now they are just an idea. You never know how many will make it and there is no rush. Once established you'll have plenty of time to pick the ones you want. Looks like you trimmed the other shoots back last...

    Shohin white pine work

That techniques of anchoring is a good idea. If you go the opposite direction and push wire through the root ball from the drain hole first it's much easier.
