    Amur Maple

I have heard that a lot of people don't like Amur Maple (Acer Ginnala) because the leaves do not reduce well. I have had some great luck this year. This is a four year old seedling that I have been playing with. The leaves have reduced down to about 1-2.5 cm compared to the average size of 5-7...

    Free or reasonable,...

Back on BNut after more than a year. Life and career changes forced me off of this site for awhile but not out of Bonsai. However, I am going to have to scale back if I remain in my current job or sell out completely if I end up moving overseas. I will start posting pics. Can't send so these...

    Bonsai (Bunjae) in Seoul

Heading to Seoul in about a month. Any place good to check out while I am there? Been a while and I was not into Bonsai at the time.

    Potatos as a rooting medium

I keep seeing on Pinterest and other social media outlets, people using potatos as a rooting medium. Apparently you just stick the end of the cutting in a potato (after stripping the eyes), place it in the ground or substrate and the strike rate seems to be pretty high. Wondering if anyone has...

    Winged Victory Hawthorne

I know it's a bad idea to repot this time of year but this Crataegus Monogyna was knocked over in the wind storm last week and the pot cracked so I had to. This is a collected tree that I found that was hit by a brush hog. It has been in training for less than a year. When I got it it was...

    Yardmadori Escallonia

I liberated this escallonia from the landfill. Cleaned it up and let it go. I had no idea they grew this quickly. All I have managed to do is to prune it like a topiary? Any advice on this material?

    Grape balls o'fire

I have wanted to try and do a grape vine as bonsai for a while so last year when I pruned back our merlot I stuck five cuttings in a mix of peat and turface and forgot about it. In early May I noticed some budding and recently I tried tugging and noticed that the roots had already formed a mat...

    Hawthorn Questions

I collected several Hawthorns (crataegus monogyna and douglasii) over the winter months and all have regained vigor, to say the least. Should I just let them grow for now, or do I need to start some selective pruning/wiring. Seem to be having trouble uploading pics today. But I will try.

    JRP propagation

Better to root cuttings or air layer JRPs? Just confirmed that the two large pines in my yard are indeed JRP so I want to try getting some material from them.

    Miniature Forest in Alaska

In Fairbanks right now on a short business trip. So, took a quick trip out into the woods and found tons of material, but, took only pictures and left only footsteps. This is 12" tall sitka spruce forest I found during my wanderings.

    Building Taper

The good news is that all four of my yamadori hawthorns survived harvesting and potting and are now in budbreak. The bad news is that I had to lob them all off and have no real experience in building taper on large material. I dug through this site and there are some good threads. However, is...

    One day in Tokyo

I was supposed to be going on a business trip to Japan but it has now been postponed until Apr/May and shortened. I will have one day of "free time" in Tokyo. I have been there before but that was prior to taking up bonsai. So I will have one day. What do I need to see?

    Hugemadori

A friend of mine brought me this huge burl from the slash pile on his building lot. Hard to see it now but it is an Alder (Alnus Rubra) and a Vine Maple (Acer Circinatum) that somehow intertwined. I am intriqued if not intimidated. It is quite large and will involve a lot of carving. I...

    Here we go again,..

I know every one is getting sick of me asking "have you ever tried a tomato plant as bonsai?" But seriously, I went to the Weyerhauser Pacific Bonsai Museum today ( a must if you are in Washington) which happens to be conveniently located on the same park as the Rhododendron Gardens. This is...

    New Ume

OK,..never had one of these before. I was planning on purchasing a full sized tree and cutting back but when I got to the nursery all the trees had horrendous graft scars. So I settled on thiS prunus mume kobai seedling. All I have done is repot, cut the tap, and remove any suckers or dead...

    Propogation by Cutting

Curious how successful some of you have been propogating material by taking cuttings. I have studied several species guides and it seems that everything has a specific time of the year when it is best to take green or hardwood cuttings. I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning...

    Shout out

I have been looking for a good source for pots here in Western WA. (POTS, not pot. They sell that in stores now). I ran across Rob Cho's store www.asiapacificgarden.com in Kent, WA and was very impressed with the selection. It's like going through your grandmother's attic only better. He...

    Soil Recipies

I have been researching the best basic soil mix for months and I have seen more different recipies than a Texas chili cook-off. In my nascent phase I was using straight garden loam and quickly realized the problem with that. Shifted over to about a 50% loam, 50% sand. Better. Heard that...

    Katsura?

When we moved into our development the city placed three shade trees along the street on our property that I have, until now, never been able to identify. Apparently they are Katsura, or Cercidiphyllum japonicum. Doing a little research I now see that there are several blog and forum entries...

    Good Varieties

I have been gathering maple seeds from different sites to scarify this winter for germination in the spring. I am familiar with Acer Palmatum varieties, Acer Buergerianum, and the Acer Ginalla. Has anyone every tried Korean Maple (acer pseudosieboldianum) or Snakebark Maple (Acer grosseri)?

    Help with identification

Can anyone ID this "Yardmadori" for me. My neighbor was transplanting a 6 foot version of this and we found this little guy growing underneath. I cannot tell if it is a cedar, larch, hemlock? Any hints would be appreciated.

    Yamadori or Rescue?

I am not positive if this is Yamadori or a compassionate Rescue. Found this Hawthorn that was obviously run over by a mowing crew a few years back. I was able to salvage a good root ball but I have absolutely no idea where to go with this. Going to let it grow and reestablish vigor. Hoping...

    Treehelp?

Wondering if anyone has ever ordered seeds from www.treehelp.com ? Thought I would try my hand at starting from seed so I ordered some JBP, Chinese Elm, and Trident Maple. Impressed thus far with the quality of the seeds and the fact that they seem to be very generous (50 seed pack...
