    Free Seedlings in Southeast Michigan

I have too many seedlings this year. All of the below were grown from Sheffield's stock and germinated this year. They include: -Japanese black pine (4) -Scots pine (3) -Dwarf Mugo Pine (3 or 4) -Sakura (24) -Chinese quince (one whole flat) -Arakawa (4) -A few mystery plants that I forgot to...

    Feeding Indoor Bonsai

I feed the most heavily in spring and fall. I use Brian Van Fleet's recipe for organic fertilizer. For my tropicals, which come indoors, I use osmocote. I haven't been as happy with the results, but I don't want to smell organic fertilizer in the house.

    Bulk Pumice Source?

That's what I use. Took me a while to figure out that I had to ask for "vulcanite" and not pumice when I called the hydro shops. Most of them don't use the same terminology that we do. Great product, however.

    What the hell is this?

    What the hell is this?

It peels off and has the meaty consistency of a mushroom. That particular dwarf mugo is sitting on a bed of decomposed pine bark in a flowerbed. It's crazy, because none of the surrounding mugos have a speck of anything on them. It's below a big, invasive Siberian elm. The elm bleeds sap...

    What the hell is this?

Looking over my pine seedlings this morning and found this. It is just on the one tree and it wasn’t there yesterday. What is it?

    Fukien tea dormancy

No dormancy needed, but they do need to be brought inside in the winter, and they can be fussy about it. I don't leave them outside once the temps are consistently below 60 degrees F.

    From seed to bonsai

I put them out in early March and they germinated in early April. Temperature will probably play a role in your results.

    From seed to bonsai

Yes. I had good luck with decomposed pine bark. Once they germinated I cut the taproot and moved them into a sand core inside of my standard soil mix as Jonas shows on his blog with his JBPs

    From seed to bonsai

I bought a packet from Sheffields this winter and the germination rate was pretty good. I made seedling cuttings from most.

    Soil sifting hack

Some people hate sifting components, but I enjoy it quite a bit. What I don’t enjoy is my sifter. As I switch out the various screens, they eventually bend and leave gaps. I came up with this trick earlier in the week, and it’s made a big difference. Below is my old sifter: Like many of...

    Seedling transfer consensus

Do you have a rule of thumb that you follow? I was going to wait until the first pair of leaves were full above the cotyledon...if I did an early transfer. Otherwise I was going to waif for hardening off. Also, any difference in your procedure for deciduous vs coniferous?

Thanks for the feedback. I was wondering how early was too early to transfer.

    Seedling transfer consensus

What is the general practice among seed growers? I have an assortment of seeds that have germinated in large tubs of decomposed pine bark. I plan to move them to 4" nursery pots once they are large enough. This is mostly a space saving measure as the tubs take up my whole driveway. I...

Bjorn’s Single Flush Pine technique explained!

Thanks for your thoughtful reply!! That makes total sense. Who cares about trunk swelling in sections that will be cut off? Most of my pines (JBP, scots, and Mugo) are around 2yo. I have a ton of them, so I can play around, but I'm still a year or two away from picking a solid leader in most...

Bjorn’s Single Flush Pine technique explained!

With younger pines that you're letting grow uninhibited, you're still pinching or pruning to no more than 2 buds, correct? If yes, do you do it before they begin to extend in the spring or in the fall when everything is energy positive?

Raise your hand if quarantine life has you checking your seeds every few hours.

My Scots sprouted yesterday, but my JBP are all still hiding out. Maybe they know about the cold snap coming up:)
