    Mid-Atlantic pine seedling set up

Hey there, I’ve done several batches of JBP and JRP and also live in Fairfax county. I typically plant the seeds in 12” trays with regular garden soil. I have potted them individually after sprouting, but typically just leave them in the trays for the first year. The second year they all get...

    New Bonsai Nursery

I got a Chinese quince from cedar rose a few months ago and love it! Perfect price point for me, and one of the few people who consistently have stock and easily ship.

Brand new Japanese Black Pine - Advice on goals, chopping, etc.

Bonsaify has a ton of videos (and also an e-course) on developing young JBP. Here is a specific video for the stage you are in (yours is probably a 3 year old). Watch the video for specifics, but I would get some wire on it this winter to introduce some bends as low as possible. I also...

    Automatic watering system

Hi Judy, I know this thread is 10 years old, but I just switched from a drip irrigation system to PVC roughly based on your posts above. I could not find any mister nozzles that fit into the shrub adapters, and was curious if you had a link. The only thing I have found are ones that screw...

First attempt at bonsai, so now what?

Welcome! A few good JBP resources: -Bonsaify on YouTube - he has a ton of videos working on young (and old) JBP. FYI - Yours is likely 3 or 4 years old -Julian Adams has a really good book on pines. Look up his website “Adams Bonsai” Do what the previous post said - maintenance until at least...

What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

I’ve literally had both of those pots in my “saved for later”! Was most recently looking at the Shuho for a forest that I’m putting together. I ultimately purchased this guy:

Field-grown Black Pine Stock - Bad start for nebari?

If it makes you feel better, my biggest regret purchase (a lot more than $70) was the pine below with the same issue. It was at the national show and I felt pressured as people were snatching up all the good stuff. It appears that it was root bound, and then slip potted without any root work...

What's the most you have ever spent on a single tree? (finished or pre-bonsai or yamadori or raw stock)

I’m very interested in the number of trees everyone is buying per year. After a few years of having a proper yard I am out of space, so really focusing on buying 1 or 2 better trees per year. My wife and I keep “Fun Times Funds” (I call mine bonsai bucks) spreadsheets for money to spend on our...

Nursery pots - "trade gallons" versus "real" gallons

I was talking about the 5 gallons from Lowe’s/HD, but after some googling, I have no idea where I got this info from haha. Just spreading bucket misinformation on the internet.

Nursery pots - "trade gallons" versus "real" gallons

Thanks for posting! I’ve always thought 1 gallon pots didn’t past the eye test. I just learned that a 5 gallon bucket is actually 7ish gallons. It can “hold 5 gallons of a liquid and safely be transported.” A bit frustrating when you use it to estimate your soil needs.

What it the most you have ever spent on a single bonsai pot? (results will be anonymous)

It’s funny these threads popped up because I ordered my most expensive tree a few weeks ago (to be delivered end of feb) and then my most expensive pot for it last week. Here’s a picture of fedex testing its flight capabilities: All good though because Matt O packs them like they’re going to...

Bonsai Growth Mesh Pots vs Ground

I would prioritize the sun over ground/pot. I have two black pines that are the same age. For two years one has been in the ground in a less than ideal sun spot, and one has been in a 16” square wood box and in full sun. The one that gets the sun is much more vigorous and healthy than the one in...

Do your children help care for your bonsai?

I have a 2 year old and a 4 month old. Here are my notes (mostly to increase your bonsai time): At < 18 months they’ll pretty much hang with you in a stroller or baby carrier. I water with my 4 month old sometimes. After 18 months they want to walk around more. Once they start walking get a...

Pots you bought without a tree in mind

Found this thread by searching for “Yozan” because I wanted to see what a tree would look like in his unique pots haha. I’m trying to avoid buying pots that I won’t use. FYI Matt O has 21% off everything in his eBay store (kaedebonsai-en). Got a few pots that hopefully do not end up on this...

It was nice chatting with you for a min by tokutake! Great show! I bolted home around 3:00. Here are some of my thoughts: The trees were amazing. I don’t know why I was shocked by the amount of native species. Especially eastern white cedar, I didn’t realize how popular they were It was really...

    Eisei-En summer sale

Just my .02 but I was surprised how affordable some of the trees were. When selling to a massive amount of people sitting on their couch, you can really inflate prices. Just look at the FB auctions. Plus, it is being sold by one of the top known artists in America. This just goes back to...
