I’m very interested in the number of trees everyone is buying per year. After a few years of having a proper yard I am out of space, so really focusing on buying 1 or 2 better trees per year.
My wife and I keep “Fun Times Funds” (I call mine bonsai bucks) spreadsheets for money to spend on our...
I was talking about the 5 gallons from Lowe’s/HD, but after some googling, I have no idea where I got this info from haha. Just spreading bucket misinformation on the internet.
Thanks for posting! I’ve always thought 1 gallon pots didn’t past the eye test.
I just learned that a 5 gallon bucket is actually 7ish gallons. It can “hold 5 gallons of a liquid and safely be transported.” A bit frustrating when you use it to estimate your soil needs.
It’s funny these threads popped up because I ordered my most expensive tree a few weeks ago (to be delivered end of feb) and then my most expensive pot for it last week. Here’s a picture of fedex testing its flight capabilities:
All good though because Matt O packs them like they’re going to...
I would prioritize the sun over ground/pot. I have two black pines that are the same age. For two years one has been in the ground in a less than ideal sun spot, and one has been in a 16” square wood box and in full sun. The one that gets the sun is much more vigorous and healthy than the one in...
I have a 2 year old and a 4 month old. Here are my notes (mostly to increase your bonsai time):
At < 18 months they’ll pretty much hang with you in a stroller or baby carrier. I water with my 4 month old sometimes. After 18 months they want to walk around more.
Once they start walking get a...
Found this thread by searching for “Yozan” because I wanted to see what a tree would look like in his unique pots haha. I’m trying to avoid buying pots that I won’t use.
FYI Matt O has 21% off everything in his eBay store (kaedebonsai-en). Got a few pots that hopefully do not end up on this...
It was nice chatting with you for a min by tokutake!
Great show! I bolted home around 3:00. Here are some of my thoughts:
The trees were amazing. I don’t know why I was shocked by the amount of native species. Especially eastern white cedar, I didn’t realize how popular they were
It was really...
Just my .02 but I was surprised how affordable some of the trees were. When selling to a massive amount of people sitting on their couch, you can really inflate prices. Just look at the FB auctions. Plus, it is being sold by one of the top known artists in America. This just goes back to...
Few question for those who have vendored 2 day events:
Do you have all your material out at the beginning? Or do you have some extra stock that you bring out?
Would you hold on to a tree someone purchased to the end of the day Saturday or Sunday? I’m checking out Sunday morning and would rather...
Love the discussion, might get a relatively cheap one to start.
I use Bjorn’s recommendation of a tsp for shohin, tbs for larger trees. It’s mentioned in his deciduous trees video, but he says he does it for everyone in the garden.
Around 13:40:
@penumbra @Vincent Tanner I see you both have “Ponderosa Problems” threads after this. Do you regret buying them?
I was planning on getting one from Golden Arrow if he is at the National Show but I have no experience with them. I may get a cheaper one and see how it does for a few years.
Took the head off this trident. Purchased it this winter and it was too straight. I’ll probably use the top left branch as the new leader and finish the cut next year.
I have no idea what I’m doing with the giant dead root to the right.
Got a bud after stumping a 6’ trident below any...
Awesome man! They’re so cheap. I did JBP, JRP, Hinoki, J Larch, trident, Zelkova, and full moon maple from them this year. Everything germinated except the full moon (I think some squirrels got to them). Good luck!
I bought 40 from treeseedsplus on eBay this Winter and probably have 30 right now. They’re $2.30 for 20 shipped. I think I cold stratified for a month or so.
The article you linked was a great read, thanks for sharing!
I have a small cement one that my mom insisted that I take this year at Easter. It moves around my yard as I need to cut the grass under it, and is filled with deer repellent (snake oil). I was pretty sure this was not the...
How much sun are those JMs getting? Looks like they are pretty shaded. I live close to you and give mine about 5 hours per day.
I’d also say watch the water, but more sun might help with that.
