Love the roots on this one, though they could use a little covering up (not all the way). Just a bit of thinning out and this could be a nice tree! Nice grab for a dime.
I collected 9 maple seedlings from my yard in June and potted them up with a mix of pine bark, sand, and peat. They are just pencil whips now, but I will probably plant them in the ground in spring and grow out the trunks. Its a fun little project.
Thank you for confirming my suspicion about the graft. I have seen photos of some pretty great looking Bloodgoods, so im not discouraged yet, though I know there is a lot of time/work ahead. What do you think of an air layer above the graft as well? Or do you think it might smooth out with time?
This is a thread to track the progress of my current lineup of trees. This is my first growing season, and all my trees are very young. I have not yet procured anything of real age, but I will.
Here's what I have at the moment:
Procumbens Nana. I did a repot thread on this one shortly after...
Im not sure if I quite agree with the theoretical "front" you've chosen. The trunk leaning back is off-putting.
I like "Side B" for an informal upright styling.
Personally, I like the sparse juvenile foliage. It adds to the "barely clinging to life" motif - that is of course as long as the tree itself is not ACTUALLY clinging to life.
I apologize for the repeat answer and thanks for the reply.
I have a batch of 9 maple seedlings I started this year that I would like to do this with (in varying degrees), so this is a great insight. So far they are between 6" and 12" tall.
I know the question was asked earlier in the thread, but I didn't see it answered - can you elaborate a bit on how such great nebari was achieved with this trunk? Was it planted on a tile/rock/some other flat surface? Or was it just the nature of the beast? Thanks!
So much talk of tamaracks/larchs' lately really makes me wanting one! Not sure what nurseries will carry them in the northern illinois area, may need to order online?
I've been debating on what to do with my juni. Been kind of wanting to stay away from windswept and cascading as that seems pretty typical (not that there's anything wrong with that). I think I might do just this. Thanks for the tips!
