    advice on cuttings

I'm in the same boat you are in. I've try before but admittedly put no real effort, just stuck them in pot and see what happens, which yielded no results. This year in May I took a bunch of maple cuttings and planted them in a tray with 50/50 mix of perlite and peat and used a root hormone. This...

What would you do with this maple?

Well I'm going to take your advice, today is a little cooler out so I figure it as good a day as any. I've already made some cuttings and I think some are starting to root but I'm going to make more just in case. I'd imagine not all of them will make it through winter so the more the better...

    JBP are pretty dam amazing!

Nice. I picked up some 2 year old bare root jbp's and yours look much better than what I received, well done.

What would you do with this maple?

I rent currently so the tree will go whether I move it or the landlord does. If the tree isn't a good candidate for a trunk chop then I maybe able to convince them to leave the tree until the fall and try to air layer a few branches that look promising. I just don't know if that will be enough...

What would you do with this maple?

That is one of my worries, the trunk doesn't seem to have much taper and I really don't know how to deal with it.

What would you do with this maple?

Ideally I would like to air layer it and the thought did cross my mind I just don't think I will have enough time before I have to move the tree, I'd only have a couple of months at best. By the way, how can you tell where the graft union is?

What would you do with this maple?

I did, like I said in my first post I was originally planning on just moving it and putting it in the ground but it doesn't look like it's going to be possible to put it where I was planning to, so I'm looking for advice on a trunk chop. Basically how and where would you guys suggest.

What would you do with this maple?

I have a Sango kaku maple that I have to move in the next couple months. The plan was originally to transplant it in the front yard but there is a crabapple tree occupying the spot where I'd like to put it. It doesn't look like I will be able to take down the crabapple until next year or so, so...

    My Arakarwa Maple

I've read that these are vigerous growers and judging from yours it would seem so. I really dig the arakawas, I plan to add one to my collection.

    Moving a good sized maple

Thanks guys for the advice, the earliest I could move it would be a month from now (after the closing), the latest is probably August maybe September. Should I atempt to move it sooner or should I wait as long as I could?

    Moving a good sized maple

Here is the pic. It looks rather rediculous looking at it in that tiny planter.

    Moving a good sized maple

Not sure how many gallons, it's a planter I made many years ago. It's about 20x20 octagon.

    Moving a good sized maple

I do water the planter but not as often as I should. The tree is growing quite well so I'd imagine it's getting what it needs from the ground. I just went and took a pic of it just so that you guys can see what I'm dealing with.

    Moving a good sized maple

The problem as I see is that it grew through the bottom of the planter some years ago and I think the majority of the roots are underneath. I'm afraid that if I cut everything outside the planter I maybe cutting off too much.

    Moving a good sized maple

Hello, I have a good sized Sango kaku that has grown through the bottom of the planter it was growing in. The tree was about 3ft when I first put it into the planter but it is now about 8-10ft tall. Now that I'm about to move the tree has to be moved but I'm trying to figure out the best way to...

Japanese Maple for Front Yard Tree?

I have a sango kaku that is going in my front yard when I move (currently in my back yard). The nice red branches really make the tree stand out especially in the winter. It's held up just fine to our CT winters.

Want to give an azalea a try

Thanks for the heads up, I'm guessing maybe fall would be a better time to do root work on this type?

Want to give an azalea a try

Agreed, thanks, I think I'll do some work to this guy next weekend and see where it goes. In the meantime I'll look for something that is known to be more suitable, I'll post my progress, thanks.

Want to give an azalea a try

Thanks for the insight, so it's as I feared. None the less the wife like it so if I can't make anything out of it then it'll end up in the yard some where.

Want to give an azalea a try

I think I understand the concept of leaf reduction but I've read that there are certain trees that just never reduce well. I just wanted to make sure this guy doesn't fall into that category. I originally thought I'd do some work on one of the many maples in my yard but they are either sugar or...

Want to give an azalea a try

Thanks for the response. I had a different vision for it but I think I can see where you're going, definately interesting. Thanks. So you don't think this variety will be a problem with the larger leaves?

Want to give an azalea a try

I'm a bonsai novice and I've been doing some reading. I've come across a few azalea threads and they seem like a great way to get my feet wet. I stopped by a couple big box stores in hopes that I could find something I thought I could work with. It was slim pickings and the only ones I could...

    Looking for good books

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, I'll work on getting them all. I want to have a good knowledge base before I start working on anything. So far I've only picked up a few trees (saplings really) in hopes that I'll have something to work with when I figure things out a bit better. I also...
