    Nova bonsai garden

My personal experience with electric fences are that they are easier and cheaper to install. But the maintenance is much higher than a permanent deer fence. Effective over 90% of the time, but it’s that other 10% you remember. The deer constantly test the fence. Winds, snow, ice, etc cause...

Looks like you’re all set for cattle. Any concerns about deer? I don’t think that fence will do it.

Relocation With Bonsai. Moving Tips Thread

I am moving. Taking my collection of trees. I’ve done a few moves and have experience with this. But there is always the opportunity to learn something new. Thought I would start a thread where people could share their experiences. What worked well, what they would have done differently...

I’m surprised how quickly you got started and how fast its progressing. I can’t even get contractors to call back here. They are so slammed.

Five Year Native Tree, Native Pot Challenge Entry

Trees were planted early last year. They were fertilized well and allowed to grow. This spring the group is well established. I did some selective pruning and wired out most of the trunks. Now just going to let it grow again. I’ll revisit at the end of summer and see if I can set branches...

    Madrone Experiment #2

All the Madrone are doing fine. I potted up 3 more small ones this early spring. I’ve been using 1-1-1 mixture of acadama, pumice and lava. The same mix I use on my pines.

Five Year Native Tree, Native Pot Challenge Entry

Here is an entry into the contest. The container is this pice of river drift I found a mile from my house. A section of trunk taproot from a true fir (Abies). The interior had already rotted out quite a bit. I cleaned out the worst of it and applied wood hardener. When I removed the loose...

    Mugo Forest On Rock Planting

Hey PJ. The wire I use to connect the rocks is smooth woven fence wire. Barbed wire w/o the barbs. Its 2 strand so you can unravel and use a single strand if you want. Pretty stiff. See where it comes out underneath the planting. No evident corrosion. It should be there a while. Here...

    Mugo Forest On Rock Planting

Yes, the watering system known as me! 😄. The lower trees have enough soil that their water needs are about the same as my potted pines. The upper trees, far less soil that drains and dries rapidly. I water those more often on warm or windy days. The whole planting goes under a sprinkler...

    Pacific Madrone Experiment # 1

I’ve tried taking cuttings from Madrone unsuccessfully. Typically the cuttings callous strongly then nothing more happens till they exhaust their reserves and dry up. Evidently this has been an issue still waiting to be solved. I read a paper where Univ. of Washington is doing an experiment...

Almost A Clean Slate New Garden

Well I hope you and your property are doing ok in this new season. Storms have no respect for international borders. But you are right, it was a brisk round of chainsaw exercise today.

Almost A Clean Slate New Garden

Last night, Western Washington was hit by high winds. This 100’ plus Western Hemlock snapped off 10’ above ground and fell through garden. It took out several sections of the deer fence. Amazingly, not a single bonsai was hit. I’ll be cleaning up for a bit. Looks like the repotting season...
