    Standard JM

Thank you for the encouragement @j evans and @kobusbonsainut ! I noticed these white edges on the leaves, any one know what this could be from? I didn't repot it this year. I got an air layer I will separate soon and those leaves are affected too.

    Cleaning up a little literati

I'll have to give the wire brush a try. I was peeling off parts of the live vein, but some parts were really stuck on there and I couldn't get down to the red. But then other parts were so thin, I went through the red and nicked the white part underneath. It just seems really hard to get the...

    Trident Maple

Yeah this spring I repotted it again and put it in a anderson flat, so it is much lower now. I just wish I had gotten some stock to do root grafts.

    Cleaning up a little literati

Trying to keep this thread updated. This was from this spring, before repot. Repotted a couple weeks ago, cleaned up the vein a bit too. Need to whiten and preserve the dead wood, and still need to style it. Had a bit of wire biting in for some initial movement, but need to really get...

Thanks everyone, well I know what I'm doing today!

What are these little white things?

I have tons of these little white oval things all over my tree. I saw them in the winter and they seemed really hard, couldn't get them off. But now, they are scraping off really easily and there's like this reddish brown stuff that smears when I scrape them. Are they some kind of insect egg?

    Tree ID

Found 2 of these at a nursery, it looks like some kind of elm, but what are your expert opinions?

    Separating air layer

@cbroad what would you suggest I do to secure the new air layer in the new container? I was thinking of wrapping a heavy gauge wire around the trunk and just trying to drive it down in the soil?

    Separating air layer

The sphagnum was cut already into pretty small pieces, so yeah hopefully it'll be easy to separate out when the time comes. I'm just nervous to even touch them at all. Are you liking the 50/50 perlite/shagnum mix? I might try that.

    Separating air layer

When seperating air layers, is it best to not disturb the new roots at all and just plant the sphagnum miss root ball in a new pot without touching them? Can you spread them out a little? I've only done this once before and I really overworked the new roots, spreading them too much and it...

    JM Planning and Design

What's going on here? -- Turns from green trunk to red, is there a graft union there? The close up of the lower trunk and roots don't look grafted to me.

    When to top JM

A third option could be to air layer it a little higher than your line. Nice chance to practice another bonsai technique and you'd potentially get a second tree for free.

    Standard JM

I cannot believe it's been another year. Another year with not much work done at all on this tree. At least it gave me more time to look at the tree and think about some possibilities. Right now I'm leaning towards air layering off this whole top section above the red line. It's got nice...

Trident Maple -- Black spots on new growth

I noticed these black spots on new growth today. Does anyone know what could be the cause? There's also these other parts of leaves that have curled around and turned brown? Any advice would be appreciated. I did repot this year.

Standard JM stock for root grafts?

Makes sense! Alright, well next spring I'll be repotting my maple, working the roots and attaching a bunch of root grafts!

Standard JM stock for root grafts?

Ahhh ok, thanks for your insight. I'll hold off then for now. What time should I look at starting that process?

Standard JM stock for root grafts?

I want to start some root grafts this year on one of my trees. Does anyone have a good resource for buying a bunch of seedlings/saplings to use?

    Home Depot Crape Myrtle

Sorry to hear that. I think that's how I lost 2 branches this winter. From now on I'm going to be bringing it inside a lot more often during the winter months.

    Home Depot Crape Myrtle

Yes, usually after the new growth has finished emerging, hardened, turned darker green, you can go back in and prune and you will get a second flush of growth. Depending on how long your growing season is, you can do this multiple times. This year I tried doing that a bit earlier than usual...

    Home Depot Crape Myrtle

I'm no expert by any means, but you can't go wrong if you do the hard cut back in really early spring, before the buds break open. This spring I was experimenting and pruned off the growing tips, leaving 2 leaf pairs on the branchs. It responded well by backbudding and opening up some buds...

    Home Depot Crape Myrtle

So I decided to repot it into a better looking container today. Probably wasn't the ideal time, due to it already leafing out, but it was the only open spot I had in my schedule to work on my trees. I can't believe how fine and hairy the roots are, compared to when I first repotted it in 2018...
