    JWP - is it alive

Thx for your input. I havent fertilized at all yet, as I understood this impacts needle length. Its been abnormally cold here (Quebec Canada) so I would guess by native species comparison we are a month behind. I have no other pines to compare to. But the off-green yellowy tinge has me...

    JWP - is it alive

Hello, This is my first spring season with a JWP, I am still learning how to care for it so I am not familiar with this period yet. I got it mid summer and was able to maintain it until now. I am concerned that it is June1 and the candles are very short, and more on the yellow side of the...

Help! Ants are in my baby larch I just dug up

Hey @Cosmos, this one was a gift! I assume it was purchased at Jasmin but I am not sure. I really like it. And alot of good info on chasing ants, my experience with ants is when they are omnipresent they are farming aphids and being a pain. Big red flag to me

Help! Ants are in my baby larch I just dug up

At least larchs dont mind wetness. I will try flushing them out for now I suppose. My googling shows that some ants can sit there without air for a looong time. Crap

Help! Ants are in my baby larch I just dug up

I went to dig up my conifers I had buried the pots in the ground for the winter. I had wrapped the pots in a geo textile material and when I put them on my bench, I noted some antennas moving from the drainage holes. Some annoying ants have decided it was a good place to spend winter I...

    Montréal beer/bonsai study group

here is a pic of the tree. I took some cuttings from the base of it on sept 30th and some are rooting already. I tried to get some good fat shoots coming from the rootbase of the parent tree and from what I can see so far a large number of cuttings are showing signs of progress.

I am in for any and all info sure. I am also growing some olive tree cuttings from a rather large and (illegally) imported variety that was itself a cutting 40 years ago. Last year I spotted a 10 foot tall olive tree in someone's driveway and I went over and chatted with the individual, and he...

    Larch color change

I asked in another thread a while ago if it was Larch or not and it was somewhat open ended. I keep waiting for needles to drop to know for sure. A tamarack in the neighbours yard has yet to drop its needles so its not time for them yet

    Larch color change

Over the last little while I have been watching a larch, that has been showing some signs of browning on some lower branches. I was wondering if anyone would comment on whether or not this is normal? It started being visible when temperatures were still warm above 22C, now nights are cool and...

Some sort of scale on my fave Olea Europaea :(

@petegreg i am not going to exclude any treatment believe me, thank you greatly for your input. Does the rubbing alcohol kill the attached female under the hard scale armour? These scale are tiny, 2-3mm across so they are hard to spot. And one of the trees is 7 feet tall, its my cuttings...

Some sort of scale on my fave Olea Europaea :(

Thanks for all your comments. From googling, it appears they might be San José scale as they are yellow underneath the scale. I am getting a feeling it might drag on, so far I have found some on 4 of my olives, one of which very overrun and the three others a dozen or so each.... so i am in...

Some sort of scale on my fave Olea Europaea :(

Just saw today that another olive had a half dozen scale attached and sucking the life out, laying eggs probably so i will need to treat more plants. My first olive dropped quite a few leaves from the neem treatment, I am guessing perspiration is being impeded by the oil. Bugger what a mess...

Some sort of scale on my fave Olea Europaea :(

So i noticed that some sort of scale insect I believed I had eradicated when I bought this tree has come back in great numbers. I just finished drenching the tree in neem oil + dish soap + warm water. The thing is these critters are stuck to the tree, is this the most effective way to try and...

    Tree rats in the city

Anyone have any tips on how to repel or not have those darn grey squirrels from destroying years of work? I am growing with the greatest of patience a small olive tree and two seasons in a row a urban tree rat has chewed off what little nebari and taper I was able to create. I came home today...

    When to trim Larch?

I love this forum. Thank you kindly folks. And yes @Wilson that is pretty much where I was planning to reduce to, above that cluster. Would it make sense to then in the spring pre-bud-break reduce the length of the lower branches, repot into better substrate perhaps a half size smaller pot...
