JBP 6yr Contest - What to do with the roots?

I trimmed mine to encourage lateral growth. You can see an example here: https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/ysrgrathes-contest-entry-thread.30619/post-619645 This may slow them a smidge but it won't hurt them. This is what the root mass will look like in a year if you clean it up during...

    I built my first bench

4 x 20W maybe? Have you had any luck with those mats? I feel like they only last 1-2 seasons for me.

A little late but I cut back my pines last weekend. The goal here was to let light into the lower growth and encourage growth in the main sacrifice branch. The third pic also shows the outcome of stripping the needles off of the sacrifice. This also helps bring light and air into the foliage...

    Three year update!! 12/31/2020!

I'm still in! I just updated my thread.

You can see a couple of examples of the embedded wire technique. I only did this on 3 trees, 2 of which are still alive (the really monstrous looking one is a fusion of 3 seedlings, the other one is just a single tree with embedded wire). I can see why growers do it -- while it is a very...

Some updates for the start of 2021. I moved last summer and am still working through a major remodel / new garden so sorry for the lack of recent updates. The pines are so big now that even with expanded bench space, I'm running out of room! Next up I'll be doing some major pruning to open up...

    Maples for orange spring color

I would snap up that tree and give it a shot. I've had cuttings throw roots, so it seems like it should be possible to layer. I have definitely seen the phenomenon you are talking about. From my own experience, and what I've read elsewhere, I'm not convinced it is fungal -- it might just be...

    Maples for orange spring color

I've had no luck with cuttings, and my mother isn't big enough that I want to risk layering it. Even my grafted mother isn't exactly vigorous, so you might consider getting (or making) a clean graft and growing it that way. It does graft easily, these are both struck grafts from last year...

Japanese maple winter in a fridge

I think you will probably struggle with humidity control in a fridge. I've heard stories of people killing trees this way by drying them out.

    Telperion Farms Fire Relief Effort

I was just there earlier this year, such a shame. Lisa and Chris seemed like such nice folks too, so glad to hear they and their dogs are safe.

Anybody here of a product called Reliant?

I'm not familiar with this one. My cheat sheet says it is a Group 33 fungicide in the phosphonate group. Its method of action is unknown. It is a single-acting fungicide, so potentially can develop resistant strains, but it's listed as low risk. It is listed for the diseases you are...

    Alternatives to Kaneshin watering cans?

It makes me happy. To each their own.

    Alternatives to Kaneshin watering cans?

They are pricey but the Kaneshin should last forever. I like that you can buy replacement screens and rosettes. They do fill a lot faster if you can dip them in the pond or a big pot.

    Tube grown saplings

I believe one of the marketing points for tubes is to develop deep root systems that are better adapted to drought/transplant shock. They also avoid some of the problems with circling roots if transplanted early enough since roots prefer going down to circling. But agree, they don't do us...

Bonsai Nut's personal pine entry thread

You can take more liberties with seedlings than with mature trees. Just look what horrors Mark inflicts on his. ;)

An awesome Japanese Maple with no $?

He also started it in a workshop run by Bill Valavanis, so quite the pedigree on that tree. ;)

Where can I find this watering can?

It's very spendy but Kaneshin makes a copper watering can that should last forever -- and it's got a rosette designed for Bonsai. Out of stock on their site, sometimes can be found on eBay etc. https://kaneshin.shop2.multilingualcart.com/index_en_jpy_30.html

    Crazy tough, impressive!

    Fungal resistance and age

I was taught not to. When we seal branches it's primarily to keep the wound edge moist to prevent dieback. There is no need for that in a saturated rootball. And typical sealants wouldn't work anyway in that environment.

    ysrgrathe's contest entry thread

What a difference a month makes, I now have huuuuge candles on these! And some cones. :) I usually remove these cones very early thinking it will keep the tree's energy focused on foliage. Is this a good practice? Is there a right time to remove them?
