    Air layering crepe myrtles

I'm thinking about getting back into bonsai after a break. It's a long story. I have crepe myrtles in my front yard that are probably a foot thick in some places. The trunks have movement and a twisted look to the bark. I know it's possible to air layer them in a thick spot. So if the plan is...

    Hi again, and a boxwood

Hello again, it's been a long time since I posted last. I haven't had time or money for bonsai. But last fall my neighbor pulled out some boxwoods from his yard. I didn't know until they were half dug, half pulled out with a truck. I tried to save 2 but only one survived the winter. It's in a...

    English laurel? And jade questions..

My mother just bought me an English laurel from clearance. It is kinda skinny, but has a curve down low. Are they ok for bonsai? Or better off as a yard tree? It's leaves are kinda big, will they reduce size someday? And when is the right time to trim, repot, or otherwise torture it? And will it...

    Stateside again

So now I'm back from my self imposed exile in Costa Rica, after nearly 9 years, and living in North Carolina, 7a. I've never lived so far north. I'd rather be with my son in the tropics, but that's coming. Anyway, what do Bnuts do around here now? I brought some pots, and had a basic bonsai tool...

my first ROR, a yamadori shef.

This shefflera was growing in another tree, playing strangler fig. It's the only one I've ever seen growing that way. It was like 3' or a meter off the ground in the crotch of a foemina tree. The roots went to the ground. I just gently pulled the roots from the ground then untangled it from the...

Are these ok training pot? Or maybe cascade pots?

I just got them for .99cents each So I know they are plastic. I can drill holes, they have none. Anyway I just wondered. I could put plants in them too, no big deal. I was hopeing to put tree in them, cascadas or semi. What do you think? Too ugly even for a poor guy?

    Studying in advance

If you've read my posts before, you know I live in Costa Rica now. But I will be moving back to the States, NC, in a few months. And I will start over with bonsai right away, and my other madman projects like aquaponics. Anyway I will be in Lenoir, Idk what zone thats in yet. Now with nothing to...

    Reverse chop

I got this tree about 31/2' tall, with twisted, fused trunks. It didnt look much like a bonsai, but I saw a good tree there. Idk what type of ficus it is or if its native or imported. But it had lots of roots from the canopy, which isnt twisted. So I chopped the top off and stuck it in a pot...

    Many thanks

I've been a bnut for about a year now. I want to thank everyone who has helped me with advice. And for all I've learned in my first year. Y'all have been great and I've learned a lot here, in my first year I've come a long way. I quit dragging home trees that will take years to trunk up. I've...

    Azalia questions

I recently found an azalia that was in a back corner of a nursery with a nice trunk but no low growth, just a sucker. Can they take a trunk chop without leaving any green? It is budding up high. Its about 4" thick and 3' tall but has been cut back. It has a long whip from the top, 10' or longer...

    Dwarfs?

I recently found what Id guess are dwarf bougainvillea, with way smaller leaves and flowers. Also at the same nursery I got a small veriagated jade. Its leaves are smaller than the normal green ones. They wouldnt sell the mother plant, which would make a great bonsai. Does it need special...

    jade cascade

Heres another jade I recently picked up for $5 or so. I wish I knew what to cut off to make it nicer and more nomas looking. I knew the pot sucks but its the only thing I could find that would work. It will do for now Any ideas to help clean it up some? I think it and the other I...

    my instant bonsái jade

The first time I saw this jade I needed it but the nursery lady didnt want to sells it. But I dont give up. When I went another day it was her daughter working. $7 she said. I couldnt get my money out fast enough. It grew in a tray for under a pot with no holes! Anyway I only took off a couple...

    colender idea

One day I put a bougainvillea that I'd put in a colander on top of a bucket with garden type soil in it. A few days later when I went to move it, roots had already started to grow out of the bottom, into the rich soil.. This made me think of a few things. If you dont have room for ground...

    a free bougainvillea collection advice?

A friens is selling his house, and says we can dig up a bougie older than him (22) that was there when he moved in long ago. Its not gonna be easy! What Id like to know is If I should just cut it back real hard, leaving just a bit of green, before the shovel and digging tools even come out, and...

    it lives!

I dont remember the name of the first thread I madre for this bougie. There was some question If was even alive up high. I think it wants to be a literati but if not, I have no idea. It seems to like the colander and gravel and fish emultion for fert. Maybe 3 weeks ago the nursery lady gave it...

    bonsái ready fig?

This is a yamadori fig I yanked out of another tree. All Its perfect branches died. But this is no f ben, so I left It to see if It backbudded. Well in the last week or so, it started. But what ( I think/hope) is cool is that its been chopped twice, and grown out again. This has lead to nice...

    pot buying

Here in CR bonsai stuff is hard for me to get, since the few stores (3 in the country) are a days bus ride each way with sciatica. So I've begged the local ag stores to get me some. I wasnt holding my breath.... Then a few days ago they got 4 cascade pots, and 4 long narrow short ones, but all...

    Dwarf bougies

These two were too cheap to pass up. The leaves and flowers are 1/3 the normal size. But theyre kinda strait. Maybe I should chop to the lowest branch for movement? Or are they just cool plants, no good for bonsai? I put them together but could easily repot to seperate. Ive only seen them...

    Air pruning in colanders?

I learned, or thought I learned that colanders air prune roots. It isnt so! I have bougies and ficus growing out the holes near the bottom. Is this "air pruning"? The bougie roots are white and point down, in the center. The twisted ficus sends out hairy roots from anywhere. Could it just be the...

    A real pine from CR

The nursery lady gave me this pine to try bonsai with it. But she doesnt have a name other than "pino". Could be native, but its not an Ausie pine. Its probably no good for bonsai so I planted it carefully in a big square planter. I thought folks might like to see one, since I finaly found...

    Bougie fungus?

I posted this bougie before, just after getting it home and chopping it way back. Today I noticed a fuzzy grey funguslike thing. I tried spraying it off, before takings pics (oops). But there is a gray discoloration still visible. I recently found cut paste and got some. Its pasty and easy to...

    what kind of foemina?

These are common shrubs that thicken up ok ,backbud, and habe interesting bark. For $2 I figured its worth it. It has smallish leaves, makes small white flowers then a green berry/fruit. Theyre tough and survive both wet and dry seasons.

    free bougie weirdness

A couple days ago I went to the nursery looking for more fat bougies. I got the last decent one. Then I saw this one. Totally unique. But not sellable. So they gave it to me. After all I spent money on other stuff. Anyway its got the craziest shape. Almost literati maybe? What do y'all think...
