    tea bag fertilizing

I think that it is a good idea, especially if it is a tree that you may want to show off or present at a meeting, etc. and you don't want stinky mounds of organic fertilizer sitting on top of your ground cover. You simply remove the tea bag before displaying the tree. Trees that are in...

    tea bag fertilizing

You can buy new empty tea bags very cheaply online, something like several hundred for $3 or something similar. I fill mine with an organic fertlizer and use wooden toothpicks to keep them on the soil. Roots try to grow up into them!

    Abrupt Re-Direction of branches

In my opinion that would take too long to get much of an angle. If I do a wedge cut, it's because I want a pretty decent angle. If you get the 2 cuts right (which takes practice), the cambiums meet well and it heals up without a large scar. I have trees that now I can't even see the scars from...

    Abrupt Re-Direction of branches

I have done many wedge cuts on many variety of trees with about 90% success rate. The largest was a chinese elm with a trunk with a 4 inch girth. I nailed a piece of leather in the back to support the remaining cambium, and after a year, counter-sunk several screws to hold both sections of...

Field growing vs colanders, raised growing beds?

I have tested 'Oil Dry' and similar baked clay products from auto part stores. I put some oil dry into a jar of water. I would shake it every week or so. It never broke down in over 5 yrs! I would test any clay product that you plan to use first.

    Hornbeam No.11 progression

The cat litter available in SE USA crumbles into dust within days if left wet. Do you have access to a type that stays intact for years?? We use turface or oil-dry which will not decompose even after 3 -5 yrs.

    repotting timing question

I may have read this somewhere before, but can’t remember. Does this make sense? Since the nutrients (energy) for the spring growth is stored in the roots, would it make sense to repot juvenile trees later, after bud swell (so the nutrients have time to get out of the roots before root pruning)...

    The science of air-layering

Lots of good information in these 6 pages about layering!!! One thing that I did not see mentioned (unless I missed it) is the difference between girdling and tourniquet method. Most people and demos seem to prefer the girdling method, but are there certain types of trees where the tourniquet...

    Brown tips?

That raises a question that I've had for a long time if anyone can help: will using a systemic fungicide also kill the beneficial micorrhyza?

Just had to post some pics of my 9ft boa and 15 ft Reticulated python. Sorry about being 'off topic'.

    Boxwood woes

It sounds to me like they are suffering because of suffocating the roots in water for so long, and also because of transplanting them this late in the year, probably losing too many precious roots. I would keep them in the shade and keep them damp but not soaking. Only time will tell if they...

    tea bag fertilizing

OK, Dav4. Thanks, if this is true then I'm not wasting my time after all. The contents does seem to dwindle after being on the pot for some time.

    tea bag fertilizing

I know that this is an old thread and nobody will probably see this post, but I have a question: Organic fertilizer only works after micro organisms in the soil breakdown the products into a source usable for the plant. How do the micro organisms get to the fertilizer to break it down if it...
