Thanks for your response! So if I created the berm with sandy loam, the bottom of the root ball, how high above the clay would it need to sit? Or reading again... the bottom of the rootball could sit on the clay, but the rest would be surround by prepared soil/sandy loam?

It has a lot of branches at the one spot(as you can see) and not sure if it would be okay to just start eliminating.

Thank you for your replies! I'm glad I brought this here. As far as fertilizer(I know there are many different opinions out there) i've been using Peters 20-20-20 and osmocote. Do I need to switch to something else during the fall/winter?
