    Any chance at a ID?

Seen this on a mountain in North Idaho. I don't believe its native as I've never seen one before. Its also not the typical juniper you see in the landscape. The foliage was almost weeping and looked really wispy. I wasn't able to photograph the whole tree. I though it had cones until I got up...

    Anyone grow finger limes?

Is there anyone who is growing finger limes and might have fruit this year? I keep buying seeds just for them to be something else. I'd really like to find some seeds from a member here or even a couple limes themselves. I just don't know where else to look.

    Need Shimpaku advice for spring

I bought a couple shimpaku two years ago and they have just been sitting in nursery pots ever since. I simply don't know how to deal with them, especially repotting. They absolutely need to be repotted as soon as possible this spring. Can I do this once the weather warms and can I do a total...

    DIY rooting ball

You know when you get a little toy out of the .50 machines and it comes inside a plastic ball? I found balls that have a hinge and little snaps to keep it shut so of course I made it into a airlayer thing a ma jig. Look like it should work well for small trees and shrubs. I popped it on a...

    Repotting cherry out of season?

I have a little pie cherry that isn't draining well at all. At this rate I'll have to start soaking the pot to make sure it gets really wet. Would it be bad if I I repotted now? I'm just starting to get temps in the low 80's. I wouldn't do any root removal, just comb them out and get all the old...

    ID a bug on houseplant?

Sorry for the horrible picture. I was photographing a hoya bloom when I noticed the little yellow bug on. I promptly squished it, should have gotten a better picture first. Any idea what it is? Not a aphid or fungus gnat, almost looks like a small moth. Really tiny, the bloom is about 1/2 across.

    Separating airlayer

Do maple really care when you separate a air layer? I have a grafted coral bark I've layered and it has roots now. I want to separate it soon as its ready so the green base has time to pop out new growth. The coral would go in a nursery pot for now but its destined for the landscape.

Stopping tip die back after shearing

The shimpaku I got last month had been sheared at some point before I got them. Probably to shorten them for shipping. Now some of those cut tips are browning and dieing. I read that shearing like that could cause the whole branch to die. Is there anything I can do to stop the die back? I did...

    Air layering coral bark?

Is a coral bark one of the varieties that will grow on its own roots? Do they air layer ok? I picked up a tall one today and would love to layer a couple starts before removing it completely from the green rootstock.

    Grafts on maple a problem?

Are grafts on maples really a bad issue if they are done well and barely visible? I almost bought a sharps pygmy but noticed it is grafted. Its low on the trunk and hard see. Would this ever be a issue? The tree isn't big, under 1" trunk.

    Seeking my first real bonsai

I'm in the market for a decent tree around the $500 price range. It will be about a month before I'm ready to order, I want to be past frost danger. I really have no idea where to start looking. I don't want to just randomly order a sight unseen tree and I'm a bit leery of ebay. Mainly...

    Protection from snow damage?

How do you prevent snow damage on small trees in the ground? I dug up a little bloodgood thats been in the ground a couple years to do some root work and discovered a number of broken branches from snow weight. I ended up having to do a pretty drastic cut. Hoping for some good back budding but...

I ordered 2 small shimps from evergreen nursery and they arrived today safe and sound. Potted up the first, no issues. Got to looking at the second and its 4 trunks, something seemed off. After feeling around the roots and gently pulling on the double trunks, I found there were 2 small trees...

    Mason bees?

Does anyone here raise mason bees? Do you have any tips to easily plug the backend of the tubes? I used clay but once it dried, the little plugs just fell out. Spent the last 30 minutes gluing the plugs back in place. Next time I will spend the extra $ and buy crimped tubes but for now, I have...

    Mail order shimpaku, climate change?

I have a couple small shimpaku coming from Tennessee to Idaho this week. Will they be ok outside in with the change of climate? We still occasionally have frost, sometimes quite heavy. I can always bring them in on the coldest nights or snug them up against the house on the porch. They will be...

    Good online info on junipers?

I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and getting a couple shimpaku. I need to learn all I can about basic care and stuff like timing for repotting/trimming. Is there a good online resource? So far all I've read is why pinching is bad and how to properly trim.
