    Silly trident seedling

I was repotting things today and had this scrawny trident seedling. It had few roots and I had this tiny Chinese pot. So here is a silly little trident. Hopefully I can keep it alive and it can grow a little in this tiny pot. Cheers!

    First little elm forest

Got this extremely cheap pot as a gift. I drilled two wire holes. The elms were growing in a random forgotten nursery pot. Moss was collected last year and the soil I used was the smallest size (probably 3mm-4mm) I keep from my normal mix. This was just on a whim so there was no real plan. I...

    Long roots on little elm

I noticed buds about to pop so I repotted this one today. Top grew to about 2 foot last year. This Elm is from my yard probably 3-4 years old. In this little pot for 1 years and 2-3 years under the lawn mower. Two roots ended up several feet long. Both roots were cut off and saved. I...

    Big box Ilex

Stopped off at Home Depot to look around and found a new shipment of Ilex Vomitoria in 2gallon pots. All but one were junk. One however was worth the stop and the $15 bucks. 3 - 4 inch base in there. Keep checking those big box stores. You never know what you might find. Good luck out...

    Forgot to repot this privet

I think I forgot to repot this privet last year... And maybe the year before... Who knows when it was last repotted? Oh well. Time to get it done! All better now. All those braches and top got chopped down too I just didn't take any more pictures. This was one of those dreaded...

    Summer clearance maple

I have purchased a couple of these in the last 2 years. A local garden center gets rid of their japanese maples in July for $7.50. They are in 1 gallon pots with trees that are about 6-7 feet tall. Keep on the look out for material. You never know what you might find, even in 100°f heat of...

    Crepe Myrtle with a face

I chopped and repotted a crepe myrtle from a 1/2 gallon nursery pot today. I brought it inside to help it wake up and noticed a face in the trunk. I don't think this is one if those happy zen kind of trees. I never would have noticed this if it were not for my grow light being directly...

    Collected Small Privet

I collected this privet from a forest in Feb. 2017. Nothing special but it was fun and learned some lessons for my future digs. This is what it looked like after cleanup Feb 2017. I repotted it yesterday Feb 2018. Most of the roots grew from the large root stumps. I should have cut those...

Seedlings + pond basket = roots

I collected a bunch of seedlings from my yard last spring. I placed them in pond baskets chopped down to about 3 or 4 inches tall. Used my standard bonsai soil mix. The root results were pretty decent. Out of this I got 4 root cuttings and potted up all 5 trees into their own 5 inch...

    Texas creek rock

Went looking for mangled trees in a local creek and came home with a rock. Not the fanciest rock but pretty decent for a random little creek in Texas. It was one stone at some point but when I picked it up it just fell in two. Hopefully it cleans up nicely.

    Remember to get your fertilizer

Found Home Depot marked down a couple fertilizers. They may not be fancy, but $1.80 for a 4 lb bag is the right price. Cheers

Saplings growing on top of a rock. Nature!

I was hiking today and found two saplings growing from a patch of moss. The moss was on top of a large rock. So rock/slab planting I guess. A pine and something that looked kind of like a maple. I thought it was kind of funny. Enjoy Nature's Attempt at Bonsai!

    Azalea workshop cuttings

Just finished an Azalea workshop today. Hoping a few make it. Perlite, cut down pond baskets, and transparent plastic tote. It will go under my grow light for a little while so they don't get baked from the Texas sunshine.

Bonsai in Japan from Google Maps/Street View

Hello Nuts. I stumbled onto a section of the BonsaiEmpire site called Bonsai in Japan. They list a bunch of places in Japan where you can go see bonsai. I looked through all of them a bit and found Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture to be of interest. At the bottom of the page they have a link...

    Yard saplings

Last year I noticed some seedlings/saplings in my front and back yard. I decided to mark them, water them, and stop mowing over some of them from about mid summer 2016. The results are a bunch of short free starters.

    two Azaleas per pot

Howdy you Nuts. I picked up a couple Azaleas at a local place. They are not large but appear to have at least a little age to them. Plus there are two per pot. I am thinking Mame size as the trunks go from just under an 1 inch to 1.5 inch. No Azalea Experience here so I have a couple...
