    Winter fertilization?

Why would your trees, or plants in general, just use phosphorus and potassium and no nitrogen? Food for thought? o_O /MT

    Whack-a-tree

Browsing around on Phutu I came across this article: http://www.phutu.com/mame-maple/ Due to the size of the container he loosened the tree from the pot with a rubber mallet. Looking at such an intact rootmass after removal I wonder, why not use this technique for bigger trees as well? Would the...

    Tea or cake?

So I'm sitting here trying to come up with the "perfect" organic fertilizer blend and a question comes to my mind. "Should I apply my fertilizer as cakes or just straight in tea bags?" What are the pros and cons of each approach? I don't care about preparation, just about what will work best...

    Surface application?

Does surface application of organic fertilizers like chicken manure, blood/bone meal and such, work? My understanding is that organics have to be broken down by microbes and such before the nutrients are available to the plant. So if it's on top rather than in the soil then there won't be much...

    Long-term ground layer

I'm planning to stick a couple of maples through boards, plant them in the ground and "forget"about for a few years. The idea is to get Ebihara-style nebari. My question is how long will the board last? I've gathered that pinewood is the best to use for this technique
