[FL, long-term problem] Bougies are my most-populous specie in the nursery, yet am plagued by chlorosis (for years, out of things to try :/ )

they call it 7.9pH so am guessing it's really 8+ :P Hard as hell, Ca through the roof. If using tap water I use pH-Down (gen.hydropopnics formula, primarily phos acid), but I have a few hundred gallon raintwarter setup so use that extensively.. I'm embarrassed to say this but I'm beginning...

For "aerial-pruning" of the rootmass, can you simply line the inside of a *solid*-walled container with shade-cloth?

I'd LOVE any specifics you could give, am in a unique scenario right now-- my backyard nursery-space was drastically reduced, BUT I found a local retailer that is basically going to let me "use their store", am going to make an outdoor garden and sell some of my stuff on-consignment there, at...

Why no deadwood for broadleaf trees? Is it because they're "porous wooded" species, versus "non-porous wood/xylem" of conifers?

BTW **love** that beasty-based Hawth., am guessing it's positioned that way because that's its "Front", and that its Back has a massive chop-scar? Anyway that thing is a good example of the type of bonsai I do, big fat bases / exaggeratedly-stout canopies on deciduous yamma's (excepting my...

Why no deadwood for broadleaf trees? Is it because they're "porous wooded" species, versus "non-porous wood/xylem" of conifers?

You didn't actually *give* a reason why, you just state "that is the main reason why".....what is this reason? As I'd mentioned, I just learned (via the ISA study guide) that the core difference in the xylem(wood) of conifers-V-broadleafs is the absence of vessels in conifers (both have...

Why no deadwood for broadleaf trees? Is it because they're "porous wooded" species, versus "non-porous wood/xylem" of conifers?

I'd say more-than "a bit"!! Of course we are all coming at this hobby from very different starting points, and since I'm in a semi-tropic area & I go for yamadori, I have lots & lots of "deciduous with deadwood" beasts in my nursery, this one dichotomy - coniferous V deciduous deadwood - is...

[Podocarpus yamma] Seeking advice on **how hard** this specie can be 'pushed', thanks to any experienced Podo growers!!

Would LOVE to hear elaboration on this! For context Re "horizontal V upward-growing", are you referring to just the way that side-branches are oriented, or are you comparing side branches (as a whole) to the top "leader-primary"? Also....and am just wanting to be sure we don't miss anything...

Is it too early to take my Podocarpus out?

To echo-on the resiliency/vigor of Podocarpus, my only Podo is one that I collected from the curb....mostly bare-rooted, with FL sun hitting it! Its recovery&acclimation to container-life was about as good as I would've hoped for had I dug-up the specimen myself!! @luvinthemountains -- I'd...

    Question about Podocarpus bark

Was surprised when I learned it was coniferous (1st thought- "Yayy, now I have 3 coniferous species in my collection", IE my BC's and the Juniper you gave me- thanks again BTW :D ) Hoping that as a fellow floridian - one who I've actually seen in-possession of a similar-enough Podo to my...

[phototropism&growth] Would a tree get rotated *constantly* for maximal growth-rates?

It's funny you mention this because it was really just last year that I finally "got the feeling" for where my sun's 'boundaries' are, seasonally! Changed a good deal of my positioning of trees based on it (I have a large # of big, hard to move stuff so for like 10% of my collection it's not a...

[phototropism&growth] Would a tree get rotated *constantly* for maximal growth-rates?

Phototropism: growth of plants towards light source(s) We're customarily rotating our bonsai-trees so they get better - NO, more-even - lighting. Some do it on a schedule, you may alter this schedule on specific plants to favor growth on (and towards) a particular side but in-general rotation...

[Podocarpus yamma] Seeking advice on **how hard** this specie can be 'pushed', thanks to any experienced Podo growers!!

For answers/replies Re 'What can they tolerate well?', any&all comparisons to other specie would be greatly appreciated!! Esp if they're tropicals like ficus, red maple, BC's, bougies crape myrtles etc!

[Podocarpus yamma] Seeking advice on **how hard** this specie can be 'pushed', thanks to any experienced Podo growers!!

I collected a Podocarpus (finally!) some time back, acclimated it, let it grow a while, then cut-back to its final trunk-line and just let it grow again. It's now/still doing excellent, always looks healthy & is growing with vigor. I intend to begin SOME interventions, but - from...

[red/acer rubrum/swamp-maple] Any tips on pruning a vigorous specimen **to avoid** excessive back-budding?

I reallllly wish I understood your last sentence.... :( Thanks for a great reply, I have 2 specimen and spring & early/mid summer 2nd flushing is now finished & hardened (they're ready to do another vegetative flush now, meant to handle them like a week ago) What are your thoughts on...

[red/acer rubrum/swamp-maple] Any tips on pruning a vigorous specimen **to avoid** excessive back-budding?

Balance is certainly necessary (though trees' usual "tolerance range" here is quite enormous if one were to quantify it, I would bet!) Where is this coming from though, the idea of mis-matching size of canopy // roots? Do you think I'm mismatching? (If so, which way? I use larger containers...

[red/acer rubrum/swamp-maple] Any tips on pruning a vigorous specimen **to avoid** excessive back-budding?

"Don't make it"? Would love any elaboration you could give on this, especially since I have a couple dozen dai/omono sized yamma's in my yard :P For instance it seems that deadwood-features on non-coniferous species (ie broadleafs IE anything whose xylem has vessels) are guaranteed to fail in...

    Podocarpus trunk chop

SORCE!! Thank you!! My yamma/yarda Podo is finally healthy enough for some intervention, was very uncertain where to go and was gonna "let the tree choose" in a way, had not even considered doing some kind of flat top thank you :D (but....mine is a clump of several trunks....crap that may not...

    What’s wrong with my podocarpus?

Would love to hear an update @ceriano if you're able!! Hope it's made it! Would also love hearing your approach/husbandry to this specimen (substrate, pH/water type(s), feeding, type of container etc anyting you're willing to share!) Have just 1 of these, they're my fave species or one-of so...

For those who have spent $1,000+ on a specimen to develop, when did you take the plunge?

Depends what species you want I guess....am thankful I'm happy with the locally-happy species in my area, which allows me to collect yama/yardadori at my liking and growing whatever I want :D

Why no deadwood for broadleaf trees? Is it because they're "porous wooded" species, versus "non-porous wood/xylem" of conifers?

darnit not only do I have to remove a lotta jins/etc, but I've probably got half a dozen specimen with massively long shari that I'd figured would be part of the final composure, some are trunk-length shari that, if they were gone, the tree would be horrible....sadly I think I'm now realizing a...

Why no deadwood for broadleaf trees? Is it because they're "porous wooded" species, versus "non-porous wood/xylem" of conifers?

Good to know-- BUT for our purposes, I'd still argue that that ^ disqualifies using deadwood, I mean the ultimate goal of all our artwork time here is "building that final-composure" of any given specimen, so if you know the deadwood won't be there in 10yrs it is kinda silly to allow it now /...

Why no deadwood for broadleaf trees? Is it because they're "porous wooded" species, versus "non-porous wood/xylem" of conifers?

Any exceptions coming to mind for you? While I was/am curious Re the "Is this dichotomy of deadwood-quality due to conifers' xylem lacking vessels?", am equally interested in the pragmatic/practical side as I have >100 trees in my nursery, excepting a ~dozen BC&Podocarpus everything else is...

So just chopped&potted my 1st *large* Podocarpus yamadori (many pics in-thread!), hoping for any advice on aftercare!!

Funny aside I figured to toss-in here: I also use styrofoam pretty extensively!! Perlite is great but heavier & costlier, so - especially when I have to filll a giant grow-box for some >1' trunked BC - I'll use a ton of crushed styrofoam in my mixes :)
