I was lucky to find 2 cuttings 6 years ago and they have grown significantly despite the loss of leaves during winters in Athens Greece. Tried to take 4 small cuttings this summer and all are fine so they seem to be very easy to propagate. Also cut a few interesting root cuttings but still no...
This is a 1,500 year old olive tree located in the centre of Athens, Greece. It was transplanted there from an ancient olive grove, when a new train track was being constructed.
Usually olives have a significant portion of interesting trunk hidden under the soil level. With this type of nursery tree you may be able to chop really low and plan a sumo type tree. You really need to check under the soil level.
Don't be afraid to chop very low, remove all unnecesary roots...
I' ve been experimenting with 2 cuttings started in early August. They were planted in perlite with rooting powder, closed in a diy humidity box for 2 months and then transfered in a small portable, heated greenhouse. They seem to be doing ok.
In my climate I grow olives in 90% inorganic (pumice 2-5mm) and 10% organic. So I would go for 100% pumice in the UK.
I have collected stumps with no roots at any time between early spring and mid-summer and have all survived.
Various collected olives were all poted in 100% pumice (2-4mm) and are all doing great. Here in southern Greece we do not generally use this recipe except for collected trees (unless you can water your plants 3-4 times a day during the summer). Usually pumice is mixed with various percentages of...
Kalamon produces large olives for consumption while Koroneiki is the primary variety for olive oil production in southern Greece (very small fruit).
Both have large leaves and are less preferred for bonsai vs wild olives.
Huge monumental olive tree in Kavousi, Crete.
With a base-wide trunk circumference of 24 meters this tree is one of the oldest trees in the world and the oldest tree in Europe. Based on the method of annual rings, it is estimated that the tree was planted in the period 1900-1800 BC, that is...
Its true that even large olive trees in the ground do not heal well. I guess I hoped that there could be some solution.
Of course as Alexandra mentioned I will let the branch thicken further before attempting any carving.
An update on the olive with some new photos.
The main branch is fattening up fast. I think that after another season I will be able to cut it back at the red line to create taper.
I am sceptical about the large cut mark. The original cut was not ideal. Should I treat it like a decidious tree...
I decided to let the top grow freely and not let any branches ruin the lower trunk. I think I will grow the top for another season before cutting back to create taper and a smooth transition with the original lower trunk. I also have to think what to do with the large cut mark on the side.
I...
It is about 7.2-7.6. Everything else from olives to bougainvilleas, elms, ficus, and lagestremias are doing fine so I cannot blame the water quality. The tridents are the only plants I used potting soil though.
Hi Nuts
This is the first season trying to grow trident maple seedlings. The plan is to grow a bit in nursery pots and then transfer in the ground. I have an issue with the leaves having a light green to yellow colour and browning at the tips. In one plant I have plenty of red leaves already...
Thanks. We are at 80f and it is now starting to grow fast. It was kept in a small greenhouse on a heat mat during the exceptionally mild winter. It did not loose any leaves but grew slowly.
Excellent tree! Did you start this as a cutting? At what temp range does it grow the most?
This is my first season with a little willow leaf and I am aiming at a shohin. It is now marker pen thick. It is in a shallow pot since I read that it helps to build up the trunk.
Currently temps here...
