    What are you working on?

I wanted to give Paul's oval technique a try again, but with a twist or should I say crack. I've combined the thrown oval wall with my crack pot technique. Cut it from bat this morning, attached to the slab, feet inside to dry at the same rate and ready to be bagged. Have a few accent pot...

    My pots, my plants

As I alluded to in the other thread I enter a few plants in the Sacramento cactus and succulent show, below are some of my entries in pots I've created recently. I think this would look better in an oval rather than the round it's in Pot may be a little small but the shape was...

    Color and texture

I enter some of my plants in a local Cactus and Succulent show over the weekend, while there were some great plants to see I focused more on pots this year. Here's some of the ones I thought were more interesting, some may be to distraction for bonsai but if the colors were muted a bit on a...

    Accent pots

Made these the other night, all under 3inches in height and width. The clay I used is Cassius Basaltic by Aardvark, a smooth black ^5 body. Looks best if fired to ^3 or 4, at 5 some blistering of the surface occurs. Here's 3 more that I finished

    My pot blog

Wasn't sure if this should go here so move it if needed. I put together a blog showing my latest pot creations and matching them up with my plants. I don't remember if I said this before but I don't do traditional trees, I'm more into succulent plants and xeric trees using traditional bonsai...

    Bonsai Collection North

Read about this Bonsai collection at Lake Merrett in Oakland CA. not the 1st you would think of to see Bonsai.I had some time the other day to kill so I stopped in for a look. It was a cool overcast morning, there were no other visitors just me and a docent raking leaves. I was there about an...

    Crack pots

As I alluded to in another thread. I've been intrigued by "crack" pots, after doing some reading I gave it a try. 1st try, started to show some crackage but not much 2nd attempt, better but pushed to much and it collapsed 3rd, starting to get the hang of it 4th, showing...

Making a slip or press mold

I've been wanting to make one of these for a while so I might as share the experience. 1st you need to make a positive mold, either out of clay or suitable material. I used foam because its faster and I have plenty of it. You may ask where to get this kind of foam, might be able to get at...

    Polishing experiment

Made a batch of terra sigillata, then divided in 2 to make one black. The terra sig is applied by brush to bone dry clay, the more coats you put the deeper the sheen. The black pot has ten coats the polished with an ordinary plastic grocery store bag, no effort at all to raise a shine. The...

    Press or drape mold

All these were either shaped by draping or pressing over something, your only limited by your imagination. I've use a glass lamp shade, a fish tank filter, a pier, a jar of pickles, hat box, the possibilities are endless Pressed over a ceramic christmas ornament (my wife wasn't too happy)...

    faceted

These were bisqued yesterday, all an experiment. The white one I carved out of a block of plaster to make a positive, then had to make a negative to pour the slip to make the copy (great if your going to do production or it you want an exact replica of something). The other two were thrown...

    Slabbed oval

My 1st attempt of a slab built oval, overall it's ok but there's room for improvement. You can see the seam joint, good thing it's at the back :p Very surprised it did not crack, sag or warp since I forgot to put the spacer under the pot to prevent those defects.

    oval attempt

Rectangle attempt Threw this on the wheel a month or so ago and altered to a rectangle. It was misshaped and uneven so I set it aside, it was never trimmed. Friday I was looking at it and had an idea to save it, although it would entail carving by hand. Luckily it was thick enough so I could...

    Euphorbia misera bunjin

I've pushed this around for years trying to figure out what to do Then I started making my own bonsai pots a couple of months ago and reading about various styles. Thought literati would be a perfect for this succulent. For size reference the pot has a 4in diameter.

    Pot sheen

I've been making pottery for about 1.5yrs and recently got into bonsai containers for friends and myself. A few have asked if I can make the surface smooth with matt sheen or luster to them, like the Tokoname pots. Have done some searching and have found out how the Greeks and Native Americans...
