    Prostrata Juniper work in progress

Update. It's is responding to fertilizer and lots of sun with lots of new growth and back budding. Planning to do some carving soon to create more taper and movement near the apex of the trunk. That's all for now. Regards, Mel

    $7 nursery stock fun

Thanks for the warning. I have never worked with boxwood before. Any tips would be appreciated. How much of the rootball would you take off? Would you recommend a larger and deeper pot for the first year? Thanks again. Regards, Mel

    $7 nursery stock fun

Figured I had $7 in change laying around and wondered what I could do with it. Found plenty of these $6.98 Japanese Boxwoods in my local box store and had fun working it into a tree. Now it's time for branch selection, wiring then potting into a club raffle pot. Best part is knowing I spent...

    Prostrata Juniper work in progress

It's been a month since it's first styling and I'm starting to see new light green growth. Built my first bonsai bench for it. Seems to be recovering well but no back budding yet. It is getting full sun and Biogold fertilizer. I've been misting the foliage in the mornings. Drip...

    Itoigawa Juniper first styling

Great discussion here from both ends of the spectrum. Now that the newly shaped and thinned out branches will be receiving more sunlight, I am waiting to see what kind of backbudding I get in the near future. I'll come back and deselect the weak and undersirable growth and will continue with...

    My first Pyracantha Firethorn

Won this Firethorn at my local club meeting raffle. It's a healthy tree. I have heard from others that these trees can be very temperamental. So far, it has tolerated full sun and has grown some long shoots. Time to remove some unwanted limbs, trim it back, wire and move the eye poker to...

    Itoigawa Juniper first styling

I received this Itoigawa Juniper as a gift from a friend who propagates these from cuttings. The material had a nice natural twist in the trunk already which inspired me to attempt to create an image of a high altitude, Juniper that has been put through a century of harsh weather. I...

    Prostrata Juniper work in progress

Thanks for your feedback. I will definitely be repotting it into a more size appropriate pot, reposition for my new front and change the substrate in early spring. For now, I'll let it grow.

    Prostrata Juniper work in progress

My friend gave me his Prostrata after losing interest and hearing that I was getting into the hobby two weeks ago. It started out as an overgrown Prostrata in a bonsai pot. I selected my branches that gave it taper and made Jin to those that didn't work for the composition. After removing...

My first post and first Procumbens Nana

Hello everyone. This is my first post. My wife bought me a Procumbens Nana for an early Father's Day gift. I am new to Bonsai and started in May of this year. I have joined a local club and I am attending classes so I can learn as much as I can. One of my first learnings was not to pinch new...
