Brian, I live in Northern Ca. Manzanita is everywhere I look. (Don't ask me for specific names because I don't know...yet) I plan on trying some air layers this year.
Also, while reading through this thread the idea occurred to me that a multi-year project of collecting a mature specimen...
Wild Dogwood. Was stopped at a traffic stop on a mountain highway late last fall. In the spring the roadside in the construction zone is blanketed with wild Dogwood blossoms. Knew it was going to be at least 15 minutes so got out of my pickup and started harvesting ripe Dogwood berries...
Sorce, You've probably answered this a number of times already. If so, I apologize for asking again. Why would overwintering in sphagnum kill it? I think I did this to my stubborn dogwood.
Grease
I'm on my third year of trying. However, I made quite a few mistakes as it was my first attempt. The layer branch didn't overwinter well this year. I think I probably put it to rest with still too much moisture and it appears to have rotted. I'll let it play out this year and see what...
cbroad, Pics were taken three days ago. I was thinking along the lines of seeds germinating too but not so sure. I'll pick one of the wierdlings this weekend and open it up. Then I'll take more pics of what I find. There were only three or four of those on the entire tree out of close to 100...
Greetings All,
Please enlighten me about these strange Kousa Dogwood berry clusters. Most that have come off the tree I'm trying to air layer have appeared normal. A few, like this, appear to be sprouting leaves and or shoots of some sort. First year I've noticed them.
Sorry, this has...
Thanks Leo,
So you're saying I should trim the bottom most part of the callus, scrape the cut down to wood, apply some accurately dosed rooting hormone, then bundle it back up for winter and let it be through the spring, and even early summer without disturbing it?
We got our first dusting of...
Indeed I have! One of my many dream jobs through the years was at a zoo where there was a large breeding population of howler monkeys. Since they were breeding I'm confident at least some of them were uncles. Now that was a fun job. At least it would have been if I hadn't just dreamed it up!
Yes, I'll try again in the spring. Interesting that you say maintain a bit dryer layer. First round in 2016 it was dryer but it bridged. Too bad I didn't get pics. So this go around I tried again but kept it much more moist thinking it would encourage rooting. I was thinking more moisture...
Greetings All,
Live in far northeastern California. Elevation about 4300' so snow and cold are a given.
I'm here more for propagation techniques but it will probably evolve into bonsai.
Love tropicals, cacti, and dogwood.
