Progressive Maple Challenge - Japanese maple #18

Are you certain that this meets the 3 inch criteria? You might need to remeasure. Incredible tree. Always a pleasure to see your specimens and how you transform them, this one is especially impressive. Any idea on the age?

    Want Chinese Elm Tiny Leaves

The owner of that tree has written articles about maintaining Chinese Elm. Here is the article, which mentioned that specific tree and talks about leaf size... http://blog.dallasbonsai.com/creating-chinese-elm-bonsai-part-1/

    Shishigashira in zone 8/9

Do you have issues with leaf burn in the summer Kodama? Im south of you and J Maples look rough by the end of summer, especially cultivars. Keeping the pots from overheating is also a problem.

What do you think this JBP is worth

Exactly. The market value based on what you will find online is well above what many members here will pay. The low ball prices mentioned by others are a priceyou might encounter at a swap meet or local club auction. The total price is pretty reasonable when you compare it to large commercial...

How old were you when you started bonsai?

First "tree" at age 11. Got a little more serious in high school. A hurricane relieved me of collection in college. I've been easing back into bonsai ever since. I'm still the youngest person at 90% of the events I attend... I don't mind, but finding common ground outside of bonsai is difficult.

    New benches pretty full now

Al, it looks like your benches are covered/shaded. If that is correct, how much direct sun do these nuggets typically get? In the first pic, I thought a creepy old man was peering over the fence... upon closer inspection I see that it's a nicely carved piece of driftwood. pretty cool. I hope...

    Been Wiring Some Bunjin Pines

Excellent job Eric, refreshing to see some unconventional pines. How do you keep the wind from blowing over your bunjins?

    Making choices?

Flower prices are outrageous, especially during the hallmark holidays. Lucky for me, I showed my wife the Kaneshin website a few months ago because she also likes to buy me a gift... so now anytime a holiday rolls around, I score a new tool from Japan!

    NC Arboretum

The arboretum is not a huge place, so there's not much else to visit other than the bonsai display and the surrounding gardens. There are walking trails if you want to do some hiking. Outside of the arboretum, I'm not aware of any bonsai related destinations or vendors. Be sure to take a drive...

    Any bench builders out there?

Looks good! I will soon be constructing a similar bench, doubt it turns out this nice. Did you end up choosing a finish?

    Any bench builders out there?

Crust is correct. I've grown up around old wooden boats and even the best varnish must be reapplied frequently, otherwise things get ugly and require replacement or major repair. In the long run, when you add up the cost of materials, a well-built 'expensive' bench will outlast two or three made...

A Video from the 2014 Carolina Bonsai Expo

Adair, It certainly would have benefited from an alternate display, as it was the best shohin there in my opinion also. My wife (not involved in bonsai) even recognized the quality once I pointed the tree out, and she eventually voted it as her favorite. But it's not a surprise that people...

Thanks for the insight Adair. Those needles were incredibly small and the branch structure was fantastic. Very impressive to a pine lover like myself.

A Video from the 2014 Carolina Bonsai Expo

Does anyone know who owns the black pine shown at 7.25 ? I saw it while at the show and it was the best small pine I've ever seen in person. Just wondering if they are a member here and could provide details about the tree.

    Anyone visited NOLA Bonsai yet?

This is a very small shop. I did not see many pre-bonsai during my last few visits, if any. This is a satellite store of Northshore Bonsai in Covington, and the NOLA location is directed mainly towards classes. If you want a better selection, I would suggest visiting Northshore.

    Melathion- adverse effects

I sprayed my juniper and the overspray badly burnt a young leafed trident. I think it was simply user error (too hot)

I had planned on attending but a wedding forced me to renege on my plans. Are you already growing white pines or will this be your first? I figured Baton Rouge was too hot for them.

    Yellowing Juniper

Brian, Your yellowing looks much more like natural shedding based on a comparison with my trees. My yellowing happened within a matter of days and was getting worse pretty quickly, and I could see it starting to impact the overall health of the tree. It also occurred throughout the tree on...

    Yellowing Juniper

It appears to be a combo of natural shedding, as mentioned by others, and my original hunch of mites. I happen to read Brent's (evergreengardenworks) article on spider mites and he mentions a red mite much smaller than the others and barely visible to the naked eye. I did paper test again...

    The Demographics of Bonsai

I think that bonsai attracts certain types of personality traits and mindsets. Those same traits are generally found in the professions described (engineers, doctors, etc). I am very detailed oriented, appreciate most types of art, and I naturally lean towards delayed gratification. I work in...

    Yellowing Juniper

My shimpaku juniper appears to be headed downhill. It first started about 3 weeks ago. The inner branches/needles started yellowing. Looked like a typical case of spider mites, but the white paper test produced very few critters. I rinsed the tree well and sprayed with Malathion to kill the...

JBP Root Over Rock Top Down or Bottom Up?

Starting from the bottom up sounds very difficult for pines, but I've never tried it so I cannot say it won't work. Your 3 month old seedling is a very young start. I would suggest using a 1-2 year old pine that has longer roots and fits the rock. I assume you're growing pines from seeds, so you...
