I think I am going to try it with ficus. Just hard to find ficus whips most online sellers chop them for branching.

I have to admit that I let the Diatomatious earth dry out completely. I have been letting my ficus get bone dry. While this works in my Lava rock and bark mix that is when it seems the DE dries up the roots.

Well bottom line comparing anything in Bonsai to work on a full size tree is like comparing apples to oranges. Though you can cut an apple and an orange into slices you cant use the same rules to judge the quality.

I have tried diatomatious earth with ficus. When it drys as much as ficus needs to dry out it appears that it starts to desiccate the roots drying them out. I don't know why it does that but it does. Just touching the stuff you can feel it pull the moisture out of your fingers when its dry.

Thats really what I am thinking about myself. Its not natural for ficus in the wild but then you dont see boxwood that is 50ft tall. Well we represent other trees that are 50ft tall with boxwood. Why not represent a tree that can survive in its location with a hollow with ficus.

I was wondering if field growing ficus during the spring and summer would do much good seeing that I have to dig them up and bring them in for the winter. Is the growth rate seen in the ground enough that it would make a difference over growing in a large training box.
