    Japanese White pine #2

What an amazing tree! Did you pick it up yourself, or was it shipped? I think it is amazing and the graft is not noticeable at all.

    HUGE Ficus microcarpa

My ficus drop yellow leaves routinely. I think it drops leaves when the branch starts to push out new more efficient leaves.

    Progression - Juniperus c. 'Wintergreen'

Looks great! I'll be at the Dawes show too. I am surprised how green and healthy it looks after all the work you have done to it. You must protect it and keep it well watered.

Repotted my Juniper in freezing weather!

Yes, the pot is large, but the pot it was in was at least 2x as big, volume wise. This tree was originally a 6ft tall topiary that I got on clearance for $5. I chopped the top 4ft off and left the bottom pom-pom of foliage. I have been styling it and letting the roots get used to a more porous...

Repotted my Juniper in freezing weather!

I have a large juniper that I just repotted this weekend. I have repotted pines in February before and they are doing great. I don't know why I decided to repot my juniper... I guess I had a free weekend and wanted to get it out of the way. The center 1/3 of the root ball was frozen solid, so...

    Copper Wire from Adams' Bonsai

I ordered some copper wire from Adams' Bonsai (adamsbonsai.com). It arrived at my house 2 days later. They even shipped it to my house without me pre-paying! They said it would be easier to bill me so they could include the shipping cost. Their wire is great quality and the best deal...

    New banyan style ficus.

Did a vert to help determine where to graft or pull down side branches. This photo was taken recently, right after watering. That explains the dark bark and diagonal white streak. Now I just need to get a few thick side branches!

Stainless Steel Tools - Much better?

I have one of those Japanese sanding blocks for bonsai tools. It works great at getting pine sap, dirt and grime off of the tools. It also sands the black finish off of the tools, so I only use it on the cutting surfaces that are already bare metal. My problem is the entire tool is showing...

Stainless Steel Tools - Much better?

Wow, thanks for the replies. How often does everyone oil their tools or wipe them down with oil? Do yours get surface rust?

Check Out T5 High Output Fixtures!

Last winter I switched from 2 400W Metal Halide fixtures to 2 fluorescent fixtures with 6 54W T5HO lamps each. My tropicals grew much better with the fluorescents.

Stainless Steel Tools - Much better?

I am thinking about getting a new set of shears. My old shears are wearing out and gather rust after a few days. I rub them down with WD40 and a rag every once in a while, but they still rust. Do any of you have stainless tools? How do they hold up? This is the pair I want...

    Young tree gone wild

I think it looks awesome as it is. I do not think the apex is too large.

    The best water wand?

I use the Masakuni watering wand. It has a really nice soft rose compared to non-bonsai wands. By the looks of yours, they probably perform about the same. http://columbusbonsai.org/content/review-masakuni-watering-wand

    New banyan style ficus.

Just picked up this banyan style ficus. It desperately needs a repot and a good trimming/styling. I just love the trunk. It appears to actually be 3 trees merged together. They all appear to be the same species. I need to start pulling some branches down to give it a more triangular foliage...

    Juniperus Sabina

I've been growing for about 5 years now. I have about 40 trees, give or take 5. I am constantly repotting and restyling.

    Need large pots

I need some large pots as well. Probably 20" diameter by 6" deep. I need 3 of them. I am thinking about making a mold and using hypertufa. The alkalinity worries me though.

Are you close enough to Columbus to come to our show on Aug. 20-21?

    Juniperus Sabina

I have killed my share of sabinas. They are commonly on clearance at the end of the growing season. I haven't figured out the exact reasoning on all of them, but they appear to be finicky about wiring and root pruning. Also, their foliage is a bit floppy and limp for bonsai. I have one I wired...

Wyoming High Ledge Ponderosa - For Klytus

    Ok to de-candle JBP?

It does seem like a very strong tree. Last year, it responded very well to the decandling. When do I needle pluck? And do I pluck every needle except for the new candles?

    Ok to de-candle JBP?

Yeah, last year I decandled mid June. So I am about 3 weeks late. 3 weeks doesn't seem huge, but if last year was a a little late, I would be real late now.

    Ok to de-candle JBP?

I haven't been working with JBP very long. I just got my first one 2 years ago. I have been busy this summer and just got around to decandling last week. I only took off a few on top, but then I remembered I was supposed to do the lower half first. Should I go ahead and de-candle the...

Can anyone tell me whats wrong with this shimpaku

My first thought was spider mites. They love the heat of mid summer. When you water, spray the foliage with a strong blast. The mites hate that and can't build up their numbers. That soil mix looks like it has a lot of granite grit, so it doesn't hold much moisture. Personally, it looks like...
